Introduction

On the New Year eve, 1st January 2020, Jericho Police Department received an anonymous tip about a suspected suicide in St. Luke. The deceased was Mr. Francis Gustavo Morello, a former police officer working with the narcotic drugs department of Jericho police, who was on compulsory leave following his involvement in a road accident that resulted in the death of Mohamed Ali, his neighbor's son. Mr. Gustavo was living alone in his apartment on St. Luke 44th Street. He was living alone following his divorce with the former wife Isabella Melanie Gustavo. The rapid response team and investigative police arrived at the crime scene roughly 20 minutes after the call. On arriving at the crime scene, the lead investigation officer discovered that Mr. Gustavo was hanging on a rope tied to fun on the ceiling. One of his arms held the rope slightly while the other hanged loosely. The investigation officer further found out that Mr. Gustavo must have been drinking a glass of milking as there was a bottle of milk on the table and broken glass and some milk poured on the floor. A closer examination of the crime scene revealed shocking details. Mr. Gustavo at the time of his death, was using a wheelchair since he was involved in an accident just two weeks prior. His wheelchair was in the balcony, five meters away from his living room where he died. Immediately, the police ruled the possibility of suicide and opened a homicide investigation.

The murder investigation involved the examination of the crime scene as well as conducting an autopsy on Mr. Gustavo's body. The preliminary medical report indicated that Gustavo had died as a result of internal bleeding in the head. He had several injuries and internal fractures on his forehead, which might have been caused by several strokes on the head with a massive circular object. His left small figure was broken, an indication that he must have tried to block a stroke, which ended up breaking the finger. In addition to that, the forensic report revealed that Gustavo died four hours before the arrival of the police.

There were three investigations on the crime scene. The investigations officer for all the three examinations at the crime scene was Michael Brown, Chief Investigations Officer at Jericho Police Department. Mr. Brown served as a homicide investigations officer for more than ten years and had solved numerous first and second-degree murder cases. His findings affirmed the forensic report of the investigations officer that the murder occurred four hours before the police arrived at the crime scene. An examination of Mr. Gustavo's phone revealed that he had commented on a Facebook post four hours before the police's arrival. No farther activities were recorded on his phones. All other activities, including airtime recharge, had been done earlier. The forensic technique involved in the estimation of the time of death involved the measurement of the core temperature.

The murder investigations identified four possible suspects for the murder; Mr. Abdul Guyo, Mohamed's father, Mr. Bruce Khan, the husband to Rosemary Khan who suspected that Gustavo was having an affair with his wife, Miss Isabella Melanie, his former wife, and Mr. Gabriel Alejandro, a suspect of narcotic charges who was released on bail. Mr. Gustavo was the primary witness in Gabriel's case. Mr. Guyo was the first suspect to be eliminated from the case. Although he had the motive and means to commit the murder, he had no opportunity to kill Gustavo. His alibi was intact, indicating that the homicide occurred on a Friday, a day when he presided over a religious ceremony in Jericho Jumia Mosque. Mr. Bruce was not the potential killer as he had moved out of Jericho three weeks before the killing. He worked as a long-distance truck driver, and at the time of the homicide, he was in Chicago delivering mails. Although he was unhappy for Mr. Gustavo having a relationship with his wife, his actions led to Miss Isabella divorcing Gustavo, and thus he felt that they were even. Miss Isabella could not be the killer as the investigations on the death indicated that the killer must have been a male, energetic enough to carry Mr. Gustavo and hang his body on the ceiling.

Additionally, she had a solid alibi as she was an elementary teacher and was in class teaching when his former husband died. Mr. Gabriel had the means and motive to commit the murder. However, he lacked the opportunity as he was free on bail, and had an ankle monitoring electronic system on his leg. The monitoring system indicated no signs of tampering, and he had not left his compound in a month.

The elimination of all the potential suspects from the case prompted a third investigation. The investigation maintained that the suspect was male, energetic, and intelligent enough to cover his tracks. The nature of the killing indicated that the suspect could not be a hired killer as the struggle between the victim and the killer suggested that the killer was not a professional assassin. Continued investigations on Mr. Gustavo's phone gave shocking revelations. His call logs indicated that he had called someone 20 times with the calls being unanswered. His Facebook messages stated that he was involved in a love triangle with an online lover who was to visit him on the day when he died. Tracking the IP address of the Facebook conversation led to Macbul University. However, the unanswered calls led the police to a motel within Jericho, three kilometers from Mr. Gustavo's home. The housekeeper at the motel gave the description of the man who had rented the room that night that fit that of the suspected killer. Inside the room, the police managed to obtain bus tickets that led to Macbul town, and thus the investigations pointed towards Macbul University.

The investigations at the university led to only one conclusion; Mr. Hassan Guyo was the person who killed Mr. Gustavo. Hassan was an engineering student at the university, owned the phone that Gustavo was calling and was the only student from the university who came from Jericho. He had the motive of killing Mr. Gustavo as he was suffering from trauma as a result of the death of his close brother, Mohamed. He had the means and opportunity because the round metal bar that killed Gustavo resembled those in the mechanical engineering lab at the university, and the motel housekeeper identified him as the visitor who had rented the room. Hassan approached Gustavo online in social media with a secret female identity and, since then, had been acquiring critical information that granted him access to his apartment.

Numerous pieces of evidence from the chain of custody connected Hassan to the murder charges. His fingerprints and blood DNA sample were at the crime scene. His footprint was on the rope where Gustavo was hanging, on the metal bar, and at the door. His blood samples were on the floor, and he had a scar on his right ear. The investigator believed that he acquired the injury as a result of the struggle between him and Gustavo. Hassan could not provide a solid alibi as to his whereabouts on the day the homicide occurred. The investigations police being able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Hassan was the killer filed charges against him. The court's ruling was that Hassan was guilty of first-degree murder. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
