Introduction
According to the video, just being able to code is not good enough. Employers like Google look for the basic programming and coding skills required in engineering. However, the distinguishing factor that the hiring team looks for is someone who can effectively communicate and work as a team.
Other Aspects of a Good New Employee
The ability of a new employee to work as part of a team is also equally important to the employers. Different work environments are characterized by people with different cultures and different communication skills. A team may have the dominant personality and those that barely contribute towards the discussion but have great ideas. Therefore, learning to adapt to these styles has a significant impact on the outcome of the entire project.
Main Points From the Video
Some of the main factors that hiring managers look for include: good communication skills, networking, and teamwork.
Good communication skills are extremely important in any field. The interviewer can tell that the interviewee has strong communication skills by observing how they handle even simple problems. In this case, taking the time to think about how to solve the problem and mobilizing the approach before starting is very important. At this point, a good communicator asks for feedback and whether the approach is correct. According to John Thomas, what is written down on the paper is what lands a job seeker an interview but what gets one a job is their communication skills. Additionally, Nina Paulo of IBM says that when interviewing students for any given opportunity, soft skills are extremely important for a technical position.
The concept of teamwork at Google is given a lot of importance. The reason is that once employees sit down as a group for a lunch break, within a short time like 30 minutes, they can meet someone they had not interacted with before. More importantly, such collaboration is essential since employees can exchange great ideas which can turn out to be meaningful projects.
Networking with other people and other teams is important. The reason is that when one reaches out to others, they might identify a problem they had overlooked before. Besides, when one network, it becomes easier for them to solve a problem since the solution maybe with someone miles away.
Lessons Learnt
From the video, I have learned that the key factors that employers look for in new employees are the ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team. This implies that for my technical skills to be marketable, I have to first market my soft skills. Therefore I have to sharpen my communication skills and learn how to solve problems with the help of other people. This lesson is relevant to my experience because I am not good at networking. Nevertheless, I have learned the power of networking and that it easily gets things done which saves time and effort, and will also inrease my chances of getting hired.
