The technology comprises of a collective of numerous scientific objectives and investigations which capture methods, skills, and the approaches to provide some software especially social media which consists of Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, snap chat, and Twitter among others. Technology also showed its invention through the existence of the most advanced hardware, such as the use of computer laptops, cell phones, and other technology gadgets that consume time. For instance, research by Brian Primack who is the director of research at the University of Pittsburgh revealed that people who spend more time on social media like two hours per day re more socially isolated than people who spend one hour per day (Khosravi, Azadeh, and Anna, 594). Social isolation and the use of social media vary across the age of people, the older people may feel lonely and can connect online, while young people have different opportunities for face-to-face and therefore social media can be a retreat. The paper seeks to investigate whether or not the use of technology can promote loneliness.
Firstly, Facebook has promoted loneliness in the contemporary world, where people have experienced social isolation than before the invention of social media. Despite the immense popularity of Facebook, it has remained under cloud suspicion. The experience by Mark Zuckerberg, in social media, is likely true. He sent out six friend requests to his six ex-girlfriends, but he experienced a super-connected moment of isolation (Khosravi et al., 598). More significantly, people have equally experienced the same. Substantially, people on Facebook set up the friend circle; the program becomes specific only to accept real friends. The problem is that Facebook has interfered with friendships and distancing people from friends.
Secondly, the use of Facebook promotes loneliness because it has also been linked with increased sleep disturbance and distractibility. The research by the University of Amsterdam has shown that people experience pleasure in response to Facebook and so they take much of their time on Facebook to the point that the sleep does not come, the situation promotes loneliness and the state of social isolation (Khosravi et al., 601). More importantly, people who utilize Facebook more often are more likely to experience anxiety, isolated, depressed, and lonely. Again people who spend much of their time on Facebook while at work, tend to get distracted and fail to excellently deliver on their responsibilities because much time is spent on Facebook, hence little to perform.
Contrarily, there are also significant benefits to the use of Facebook. Facebook has promoted the ease and accessibility of shared information. Social networking through the use of Facebook has been demonstrated to assist introvert students in developing socialization skills (Khosravi et al., 603). The study has revealed that students who explore Facebook in communicating about school and capturing some knowledge from Facebook feed tend to score higher grades compared to students who only focus on classwork and ignore social media. Facebook allows for more availability of resources for people who may not have access. For instance, Facebook connectivity can assist people who suffer depression to find support from friends, and that promote faster healing.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the use of technology, especially social media such as Facebook has immensely promoted social isolation and loneliness among people of all ages. But it has both the bad and the good; Facebook has increased sleep disturbance and distractibility among uses. Spending much time on Facebook reduces the time for sleeping and leads to distractions. The use of Facebook among youth at the workplace has also taken much time and deterring performance at work. On the other hand, the use of Facebook has allowed the introverts to develop on their social skills. Many students have shared ideas and knowledge, thereby enhancing their performance.
