Paul Lukehart is an author from Bakersfield, California, who has worked in warehousing distribution roles from the supervisor through the director. His industry experience includes in-house distribution for retail and e-commerce businesses, and third-party logistics experience in produce, appliances, apparel/footwear, and reverse logistics. He wrote the book, Practical Floor Supervision to provide a reference for warehouse supervisors. Distribution is a large and growing industry. Being a warehouse supervisor is way gritty as one has to meet production and quality goals while maintaining a safe environment and ensuring there's teamwork among members. Also, it is too expensive since any injured person must go through a drug test.

Repairing property, paying for light-duty or any other non-productive functions, insurance for an accident-prone site, and having OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) to conduct more site investigations is expensive; hence takes time and effort to be safe. Quality is the extent to which the process output matches what you want it to production. High accuracy and low damage is the actual definition of good quality. It impacts on the experience of the client since they can give recommendations about the bought product. Quality problems also need to be minimal since they waste a lot of time when fixing the issues. To maintain and improve productivity, one has to deliver quality services to customers' satisfaction to enhance brand reputation.

On the other hand, productivity ties directly into cost, and controlling cost is always the best way of generating more income. It is measured in rates of goods handled per hour. To ensure a sound output, one should check the number of people they are working with as well as their expected rates. Therefore, one can know how much work they will accomplish in a certain amount of time. Moreover, several barriers make it difficult for a team to succeed, which are: Equipment that does not work, lack of supplies and equipment, processes that are undependable, poor communication, failing to make relevant decisions that every team member is comfortable with, and insufficient human resource infrastructure.

In most cases, when the depicted barriers are not met, the main task will always be poorly done, incomplete, and not of the required quality. The action might then require more unplanned funds to be rebuilt or tarnish the brand reputation as well as the efforts of qualified employees. The job of a supervisor is always to operate a shift. Shifts have five parts: Preparation, startup, production, end of the change, and post-shift where each part has different professionals. To make the shifts effective, the supervisor should appoint objective leaders who will be in control and responsible for all procedures, blames, and losses in case the task is of poor quality. A leader is someone who influences a group of people to achieve a specific goal together.

A leader must help his team by acting as an example in doing the required task first, then other employees follow. Also, leaders should communicate any useful information team members need to know to make a task or a project successful. Safety, quality, and productivity are the essential elements to be considered when working in a warehouse. Therefore, the purpose of performance standards is effective communication and rewarding employees who work hard to ensure quality work has been achieved.

A supervisor can deal with any unacceptable performance by giving the first warning to employees who fail to meet the expected standards or firing and hiring new ones when the initial employees fail to adhere to the first warning. The most valuable lesson learned from the book which one can apply to their future job is good supervision and leadership qualities as well as patience to achieve good quality results in a task or project.
