Introduction
Folk music is a type of music that is usually composed of people without authority and treasure and moneymaking commitment. Corridor was famous and popularly known during the period of war between America and Mexico. Traditional Mexican songs are well known in the entire universe .the songs feature a wider range of musical genres and styles of performing.mexican folk songs have greatly been influenced by cultures that are the culture of the people of Mexico and Europe. Corrido allows the reader of the song to have various points of view on migration the Mexicans experienced the. This type of songs is written as a collective diary to be passed from generation to generation but not for selling purposes. This paper will address the past regime in which the Mexican songs were written, the content of the song and the role performed by the songs.Going to the song by Brown & Shannon will be used when giving illustrations.
The Historical Context of Corridos
The Mexican folk songs were written as a result of the Mexicans migrating between 1900 and 1930, Los Angelas was an ideal market for a radio station and advertisements that targeted the burgeoning population of the Mexicans in the United States. Through this period Mexicans combined their efforts and creativity that captured the spirit of the struggling Mexicans who were crossing the border.corrido was the most famous form of music in Mexico it was characterised by telling stories about the heroic figures and each day folks. The recording of corridor usually took place in makeshift studios where the phonograph records and radio broadcasts were aired from also sung in meeting halls, family gathering and local clubs .a person who does not have the Spanish knowledge could not appreciate the verses in corrido.
The Content of the Mexican Folk Songs
Mexican folk songs were written in the Spanish language which has different content and style. The major themes that are evident in the Mexican folk songs are influenced by the immigrants who explained the encounters during the migration and reign of dictator Porfirio Diaz through telling of stories it included personal love, anger for politics, cultural change, loyalty for the nation, racial insult, ethnic pride, plight of the workers, romance, homesickness, monetary fight and the loss and gained they encountered during migration.
The Anglo Americans had little attention to non-English cultural productions.they were given the freedom of expressions to say what they felt or what they wanted by the use of corridos. Manuel H. Pena says that they usually perform a collective diary which is a way of showing peoples reaction to activities that are important to them.
Commerce, culture and community life in America was being revived by mixture of new refugees USA.the employers were resisting the restriction of restricting Mexican immigrants which were being levied by the government .catholics and non whites faced hostility by the natives this resulted in a significant threat to the production power of the natives since the profit realized by the employers was hugely dependant on Mexican labour.
The widening of agriculture and business during the reign of dictator Porfirio Diaz the peasants lands were grabbed in Europe ,the educated people drove peasants off their villages in to get huge pieces of land for the establishment of large estates of sugar and coffee.through the Mexican folk songs the immigrants expressed the challenges they faced such difficulty in crossing the legal border from Mexico after that law which was amended in 1924 which required the refugees to pay $10 to get a visa and also to be in position to pass the Spanish test.
The Role Played by Songs in the Mexican American Community
Mexican songs played vital roles in 1920 whereby they give hope to the refuges ,for instance "advice to the Northern" the persona gives advice to the northern whereby the voice says that the refugees should cry no more, have money for getting their visa, prepare their goods, prepare themselves, keep their hats clean since they were to move out of exile without the knowledge of the natives since peace had been restored in their motherland and they could eat good beef.
The purpose of folk sons are sharing of stories, values, emotion and attitudes among individuals with similar experiences also culture. This type of music thus helps the ordinary people to report and reflect their life experience giving a source of history that is similar to those of media.
