Such a great night this was, with all the four campers having pitched their tents at the centre of the woods, feeling like they controlled the ecosystem around them. This was the lifelong accomplishment these teenagers had made so far in their lives, and the fact that they were out there, alone, controlling what they thought or said was enough proof that they were holding the button. For a day that started off quite sunny, the dense clouds with frowned and creepy faces formed on them, and the slightly peering sunlight that met the snowflakes that had started to form made it look like it was snowing blood. The inventory checked in just right, with the sleeping bags, torches and a few pounds of food, and they were set to go to the world as they were. A sudden change in the weather seemed like a typical environmental claim for a territory, but the stormy wind afterwards pushed the clouds right into the peak of the sun, filling the entire woods with utter darkness and the smell of death. "I think I heard something moving there," said Jeffrey, a twenty-two-year-old pale and skinny guy, with a rather shaky voice. His suspicion met criticism since apparently, he was mocking the level of manhood present. Within that moment, the tents they pitched the entire afternoon was mysteriously pulled up the treetops, and they never saw it again. Well, this was the time for plan B as Mike, in a superiority that matched his physique suggested. A business student in his sophomore year, he quite had it all covered when it came to improvising and planning. The trees listened to these inexperienced teenagers arguing their way out as their roots shook with anxiety, making the earth experience a slight tremor. One of the trees shade off all its leaves, exposing them to the dark heavens. The whispers of the cover plants lamenting the presence of these ecological destroyers and the murmurs of the bushes clumped in harmony were signs that these intruders didn't belong here. "We have got to go boys. I don't feel safe in here." Brianna, a nineteen-year-old short and silent guy (who by the way only talks when he deems necessary) spoke, and if this wasn't a sign of urgency, I don't know what is. Wheeler, the fourth person, was as flexible as the branches that were waving them out of the woods, and he just went with the flow. His twentieth birthday was in a week's time, and he felt this camping idea was a way of proving his manhood as he approaches it. And so they walked out, looking for any sign of a structure they could spend the night in, while waiting for the wake of dawn and formulate more "manly" options.
An abandoned house presented its way after a twenty-minute search, and thank God, and their sleeping bags were intact. All they had to do was find a corner and lie there till morning. It was that simple, right? Wrong! Jeffrey once again "thought" that he had something, and this time, the others laughed at his paranoia and invited him to shut up. The door of this structure seem like it had seen the world war all the way to the Renaissance, survived the great recession and was still looking forward to the after ford future. Mike reached to push it, but it caved in before he could get to it. Using their flashlights, they reluctantly entered the room that smelled of dust and old age. The floors were made of rotting wood, the windows held intact by spider webs, the ceiling dominated by moulds and there was no furniture apart from the old wood table at the centre of it, which had red fungi, or was it blood stains? Ironically, the only place that seems a bit tolerable was under the table, and so with joint effort, they moved it. As they stepped on the slightly rotten wood, apparently better than the entire flow, the boys sank with it and went in rounds as if they were on a Ferris wheel, and finally, they landed with a thud. I use the word thud because the area was muddy, marshy and smelly, and they could occasionally see a few bones popping out of the mud, and disappearing. Well, this was the time for them to let go of the manhood they sought and they started screaming wildly. With these screams, the walls of what seemed like a cave started peeling off and fell on the mud in splashes.
They swam or crawled through this mud, and reached the stairs, at least they were some time back, and found a room that was surprisingly well-kempt, well-lit and refreshingly fragranced. "We must have died in the marsh, and this is heaven," said Mike with undeniable happiness. "Whoa, for once I thought we had entered the cursed castle" added Jeffrey. "Way to stay childish man. There is nothing like a haunted anything. We lost track of our way, and now we are here. Don't try to hook things up." Once again, Brianna spoke. But where was wheeler? A splash of blood painted the entire wall of this building that seemed like a church or a temple, and suddenly, the bright room turned into a dull and creepy place. Something heavy fell at the feet of mike, and to their surprise, it was wheelers skull. Before they could react, they were all pulled in different directions and couldn't locate each other. After ten minutes of freaking out, a dead silence broke out as they built mind images of how they would get out of that place. Then within the soothing silence, they heard footsteps. These were more of claw steps than footsteps. As the footsteps approached them, Jeffrey fidgeted and announced himself a viable target. With a couple of splashes, screams and crushing of the bones, he too was no more. The two survivors had to think of something, or they would face the same fate. They combined their tactics and skill, maneuvered through the booby traps, went past the dark and echo-filed corridors and finally they saw some light from the outside. The joy that Mike and Brianna had was beyond words, and they pushed the wooden cover above their heads, ready to get out of this nightmare they have been part of the entire night. Just as Mike stepped on the fresh grass outside, he pulled Brianna. They were painted in mud and blood, and all they wished for was to get away from this freak show. As they turned around to see which way to go, a giant scorpion-man like creature with an embedded wooden cross at the centre of its head slapped mike unconscious and injected its venom into Brianna knocking him dead.
