Introduction
Over the years, the horror genre has brought significant importance in the lives of viewers as in regards to entertainment and has provided a general of more viewers as days goes by. The term horror films or movies can be termed as a film that seeks to elicit a physiological reaction such as elevated heartbeat and aims at evoking once nightmares, revulsion, the terror of the unknown and finally fears. Italy has therefore invested in horror films which are known as "Italian Horror Films" which has attracted over a million viewers. Therefore in this paper, I will examine the basic characteristics of the Italian horror films and identify which studios influence the Italian horror films productions.
Italian Horror films are influenced by the films produced by an American studio and the corresponding revival by British one which include American International pictures and American Sound Studio. Also The Berberian Sound Studio, Tigon British Film Production and Amicus Production.
The Italian horror films have some basic characteristics that differentiate it from another genre such as; it is usually divided into three periods in which they are going to be viewed, which normally last for only ten years each. It includes the Italian Gothic (1956-1966), a revival of Dracula movies which are characterised by romantic 19th-century setting. The Gialo (1967-1977) which are usually mystery films that are characterized by modern settings and driven content and uses repercussions of the cultural changes and escalating disorder that could not be ignored. And finally the Dario Argento period (1978-1988).
Also, the Italian horror film is characterized by the emphasis on female characters which in the director's perspectives are often depicted women as the motivating force behind the film of the storyline. Therefore this genre usually uses feminine gender as their main character. Another feature is it uses features like sex connotations (Italian Gothic), the melodrama in which they try to bond sexuality and horror. They usually use virgins girls in their storyline where the male Dracula or vampire seeks a virgin girl to kill and suck blood to gain more power.
Uses satanic evil graphical features such as people drinking human blood through sucking their blood from the neck, people inform of vampires, wolves, and monsters and witches practicing witchcraft and sorcery. It is usually also characterized by supernatural powers where people like vampires can resist bullets, and the can live for millions of years without dying through feeding on blood.
It also uses features such as graphical pictures that depict terror, fear, anxiety, and death. This kind of graphical pictures tends to show you the type of genre your watching. This is horrors are termed to be the scariest movie films which are true according to Flavia Brizio. Example of such is a man chasing a woman in the woods with a knife to cut her throat is a kind of picture that depicts fear and terror to the viewers.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Italian horror movies depict quite outstanding features that make them be rated at a high level in the film production with most people watching it. And its characteristics make it stand out among the other genres.
