Introduction
This chapter defines texture as the perceptible grain of substances and surfaces which aid us to comprehend the nature of things in our environment. The design elements' feel is similar to their visual function, and also it has been identified to be virtual and physical in design. Therefore, viewers tend to see visual presentation and effect instead of the designers manipulated texture (Lupton & Phillips, 2015). Also, it can be used to reinforce a perspective, establish a mood and even express a sense of physical existence and its beauty lies in its contrast or poignant juxtaposition - the chapter discusses a wide range of textures that are generated by a camera, hand, code, and computer. The surfaces are concrete and abstract, captured, brushed, built, configured and sliced with the primary intention to remind us that they have a physical, genuine and seductive capacity.
From my experience, I agree that texture beauty depends on contrast (Lupton & Phillips, 2015). It is because when I view images that I had captured with my camera, increasing the contrast of the picture makes it brighter and more vibrant and darkens the shadow. While decreasing it makes the image duller. In both scenarios, the texture natural beauty is interfered with and therefore, it advisable that it remains balanced, it is neither very high nor shallow.
In this chapter, framing was defined as a structure that is present and absent by philosopher Jacques Derrida. It has been identified that contemporary designers aim to delete frames and in politics, it is used to explain a problem in a way that influences how people understand it. In graphic design, the vital resources include; cropping, margins, borders and captions and they affect our perception of information. Therefore, this chapter concentrates on showing how the impact and meaning of an image and text changes rely on how it is cropped or boarded. Frames help to make an image more visible via distinguishing it from its background (Lupton & Phillips, 2015). Also, it penetrates an image to render it open, and it can also serve as a transition from figure to ground, inside to outside.
From my little experience of photo editing, I can fully support that cropping impacts an image (Lupton & Phillips, 2015) because I can eliminate the edges or unpleasing part; thus, leaving those that satisfy my sight. Also, through my phone, I can merely add the frame of my choice to my pictures making look more appealing. Therefore, I tend to agree with the chapters ideas entirely. Conclusion
In conclusion, I found these chapters to be fascinating and educative especially, how they present the importance of framing and texture in an image and I tend to agree with most of their ideas. Also, they gave me the opportunity to decisively reflect on the impact of cropping a picture as well as how the texture determines the beauty of an image. Therefore, the numerous ideas elaborated by the above chapters will be of assistance to many academicians who are pursuing photography and Graphic Design courses.
