Introduction
Christian faith can be used in understanding the relation between love and justice which are crucial in achieving a responsible society. Love can be used to imply ones active care for another, while justice implies the unbiased consideration of different parties without personal interests. Therefore, justice creates a link between love and the different elements of society. In business ethics, Christians should live to seek business practices that are consistent with the ethics of human relationships and a person's obligations (Melchin 75). Therefore, for Christians, the operations of profit works are often in line with Christian ethical teaching. In this paper, I will argue about how Christian ethics promotes love and justice in business ethics which is a significant factor in the success of any business.
The Christian faith prompts a dedication to moral actions. Morality in Christianity calls for the love of others and equal treatment. Although every business is out to succeed, the Christian moral actions guarantee the success of one's efforts in business. The Christian faith, therefore, helps in the reframing of the ethical questions that are often faced by workers and this help drive them in observing business ethics. It provokes acts which are rooted in the belief of the Christian teachings. Business ethics are observed because of the desire to promote the well-being of others and not simply to act a known good but championing for good itself.
Christian faith provides a basis to fight against the social evils. In business ethics, different elements of mistreatment have continued to be prevalent in a number of ways. As part of an adults experience in business, Christian teachings will advocate for being at the forefront in championing for the rights of those who are subjected to unfair treatment. Melchin view about evil is that "Evil pushes us to the limits of our faith, in our loved ones" (77). Evil challenges all our ideas and it pushes to the limits of our faith. Evil creates the drive to do what is not right, and as such, in promoting business ethics, we should take a stand based on the Christian teachings and avoid practices in business that might enhance unfair treatment of others. When the forces of evil outshine us, we happen to act not out of our own will, but we intend to be driven by the evil. Also, it makes people in business to perform imperfectly, thus, promoting unethical business practices.
Just as the ability to be ethical can be promoted through continuous demonstration of good acts, our ability to be unethical can also be promoted through continuous practice of malicious acts. Melchin argues that," While newly acquired habits might seem stunning and strange they soon become familiar parts of daily moral landscape" (82).Unethical behavior might seem not normal at the beginning, but we seem to incorporate them in our daily practices. Eventually, failure to control unethical behavior makes one assume them and pretend they are normal. The problem arises when effects of the unethical behaviors go beyond our control hence our efforts to overcome them become curtailed.
Oppression and other forms of unethical behavior can be promoted by influential individuals who promote their interest at the expense of others. Melchin promoted the idea that "Domination and oppression can be deliberately initiated by powerful individuals..." (83). Business is conducted to make a profit and it likely that powerful individuals whose desire is to make more profits will try everything at their disposal to meet their objectives. Once such powerful individuals have developed the need to achieve whatever they desire even if it means mistreating others, the social structures automatically get into place to achieve what a given individual will not achieve, and once they realize this, they develop means to maintain the status quo. In business ethics what accrues benefits to one person might have effects on others. As such, a person not observing business ethics might not be aware of the challenges that their conduct might have other persons. Therefore, to be ethical in business, people need to be aware that their benefits might be arising from effects caused to others.
Business ethics is mainly based on the premise that promoting good for others and creating a corporate image will make the business succeed. Christian faith believes in promoting the good of others through championing for ways to help other people enjoy their life because of the roles that they play in our lives (Melchin 83). Observing ethics in business implies to set up structures that will help create an environment that promotes the good of others for the success of the business. Supporting others according to the Christian faith helps in building our faith and the promotion of our efforts. Therefore, observing ethics in business is beneficial, and should involve treating business stakeholders equally and caring for every person regardless of the roles that they play in the business.
Ethics in business just as the Christian faith should mainly be concerned with being conscious about the welfare of others. What drives unethical conduct is being driven status quo which assumes some of the treatments that we are all aware that are not just and do not prompt the betterment of others (Melchin 81). Most business tends to be biased based on the role that each person plays in the business. Treatment of persons depending on the role that each one plays is the basis of unethical behavior with most businesses. The Christian perception of evil postulates that the senses of evils have become so prevalent because they have become a normal state of affairs and nothing is being done to address them. The same is in business because most business people are unethical in their conduct and they are mainly being driven by the need to make more profit.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the perception of the Christian faith with regards to love and justice which vital elements of ethics can effectively be applied in business ethics. Most firms have continued to be unethical because the social evils have become so common hence people end up taking them as the normal of state of affairs. Christian faith promotes the idea of being conscious about the welfare of others through enhancing equal treatment and championing for the stop of social evils. Therefore, in trying to observe business ethics, business persons need to be mindful of the affairs of others regardless of the roles that they play in the business. Creating a good corporate image is necessary for the overall benefits that will accrue to the business. Ethics in business calls for moving away from the assumption of the status quo in trying to address some of the unethical business practices.
