Specific statement: To inform My audience assault weapons should be banned and how it would minimize casualties in mass shootings and enhance safety in public spaces.
Thesis: Assault weapons have frequently been to commit mass murders and I think it is time we put an end to this menace. I shall explain how banning of assault firearms would lead to the improvement of safety of members of the public.
Introduction
Assault weapons are semi-automatic firearms with the ability to have a detachable magazine at the same possess features such as folding stock pistol grip and a threaded barrel (Schildkraut, 2019). The purpose of this essay is to explain in detail why assault weapons should be banned. The recent wave of gun violence across the nation has resulted in people living in fear, given the high number of individuals in possession of the assault weapons. The huge sales to the civilians raise the question whether these weapons should still be sold to civilians. Assault weapons should be banned because of the following reasons
Assault Rifles Have High Capacity Magazines, Majority of the assault firearms have become advanced, and they can hold more than 50 rounds of ammunition in a single magazine. Such a high number of ammunitions makes it easy for mass shooters to commit mass murder. Given the recent wave of mass shootings that resulted in the loss of innocent lives through assault weapons, it is in our best interest that these weapons are withdrawn. The safety of the people should be given a priority, and the wave fear can be seen where people quickly run when they suspect that there is a mass shooter in their vicinity. The case of the mass shooting in Orlando signifies the extent to which these assault weapons can cause human massacres thus the need for a ban (Schildkraut, 2019).
Assault weapons are weapons for war. Despite the claim that assault weapons are useful, they are still weapons of war, and this should be readily available to the public (CAPPEL, 2019). The fact that we have many assault rifles across the nations means that at any time a mass shooting is more likely to occur. Living in uncertainty because of private possessions of the machine should be enough reason to initiate a ban on the rifles.
Assault weapons are not defense weapons. People often argue that they own assault rifles to defend themselves. This is not a valid excuse because assault weapons are not defense weapons, and this explains why police officers don't walk around with them but rather with short guns. Assault weapons are too bulky and thus cannot be efficient when it comes to quick defense. With an assault rifle, it is tough to hide for the bad guy and make an aim because of the weight of this weapon. This debunks the defense reason and makes owning these weapons unnecessary because unlike short guns assault rifles, thus making them illegal would be a good idea (CAPPEL, 2019).
Conclusion
It is time we accept that assault weapons are only good for fun but not shooting on fellow humans or animals. Banning them would minimize the guns from getting in the wrong hands. To those who would like to have fun with the rifles, they should approach clubs with all sorts of assault weapons where they can have their fun. Through accepting and banning the assault rifles, the chances of many people being killed in mass shootings will gradually reduce. People will again feel confident in public spaces such as schools and malls because people don't access assault weapons.
