Introduction
What surprised me the most about dating years ago are arranged marriages? It is surprising how grooms and bridegroom's parents would set their children's marriages without their say. Like, this type of marriage didn't allow the couples to get to know each other, and the fact that most of them were betrothed to their significance at early as two years old is just overwhelming. The other surprising bit about arranged marriages is that in most cases and in wealthy families, marriages were arranged as a binding agreement to seal family ties in business or build upon the families' relationships. The Greek and Roman type of Romance and marriage were also very surprising, and it is because one would win a spouse through capture, or kidnapped during the war. These times and ages are surprising to note that the element of romance was not a matter of consideration as it is today (Edwards, 2017).
I agreed the most with the Courtship age in the 19th century. Courtship, unlike the arranged marriages, allowed the male to spend some quality time with their supposed girl before marriage. Again, having a chaperon accompany the girl whenever she was out with to meet the boy ensured the girl would hold her reputation and that they would only have sensible discussions. It is a dating style and era that I find most appealing because dating was mainly based on understanding and knowing each other without having to make up or plan a marriage without the consent of the couple. Reputational values between the boy and the girl are important elements that dating and marriage should uphold at any time because these factors lead to successful relationships and marriages that last.
The early and mid-90s dating is similar to today's form of dating because the element of dating and going out without a chaperone is considered. The other similarity is that in this era, dating for the male was required to be of many females which in today's form of dating is popularly considered by many. Again, dating at this time involved the boys and girls meeting at fancy locations like restaurants and at the movies which are a tradition adopted today are where boyfriends tend to take their girlfriends at such places to have a good time (Levin, & King 2016).
One of the differences between this era and today is that during the early 90s and mid-90s, the male was to be fully responsible for their relation to a case that is not popular today. Today, the females too are taking up the role of dating where it has witnessed where women pay up for bills during dating outing a case that was not allowed during the early 90s. The other difference is that in the early 90s of dating, the chaperone was still escorting their girls to these dating locations, a practice that is completely forgotten today.
Conclusion
I would choose to live in the courtship era because, at this time, reputation and upholding positive values were highly required of the boys and girls as they dated or got into marriage. Marriage and dating I believe, should be founded on values and principles and that is why chaperones accompanied the girls on dates. Therefore, I would choose to have lived in this era.
