Introduction
Ahimsa is one of Yamas that is mostly practiced by Buddhist, the Hindu and Jainism traditions. It can be defined as a way of loving and having the compassion to yourself and others and living a non-violence life. Non-violence is the act in which one shows love and compassion to themselves or other people. This constitutes both physically whereby one does the things that do not harm them in any way, mentally in that people should always be concerned about what they think and emotionally concerning how they feel in daily life. To practice Ahimsa, one should always take into consideration the things that do not harm them.
For non-violence to be displayed in everyday life, one has to first understand how violence finds its way into our lives. Firstly, people tend to have too much expectation in every that they do in their daily lives such as students expecting to get a job immediately after college. At this point, if the student graduates and does not get a job it will lead to disappointments and frustrations which in return leads to violent actions such as crime. Another form of violence is having negative responses towards yourself and people around you. This makes someone become violence. Being at peace with you is one form of Ahimsa; this helps someone to avoid violence. Forgiving oneself and others is also a way in which one can avoid violence unlike when someone is bitter about someone or something.
There are several ways in which one can incorporate ahimsa in their daily lives. Firstly, practice love of one. In everything that someone does in their daily lives, they are supposed to do whatever they love doing. Secondly, every person should love and have the compassion to themselves and others. This helps one to prevent violent actions that came about due to hate. Forgiveness should also be key because it helps people live in harmony. Finally, one can carry out some activities intentionally such as keeping your thoughts out of negative thoughts. This helps one prevent any violent actions.By carrying out yogis every day, it helps in the prevention of violence activities. This is because when you doing yoga one is able to examine what they are thinking. By having the time to examine what you think, someone can be able to tell if their thoughts are negative or positive. In understanding your thoughts one is able to make better decisions.
In other words, Ahimsa can be considered in terms of thoughts in the mind. Some people can be healthy but their thoughts can have a negative impact on their lives. Having negative thoughts towards someone or something can cause negative responses such as fights which can not necessarily be physical but they can be internal fights or both. Thoughts such as frustrations envy and disappointments can also have an impact on someone's wellbeing. Thinking about being like someone or possessing what other people have can make someone feel bad about them.
If our thoughts are used well they can also lead to non-violence actions. Having positive thoughts about someone or something can help in the prevention of negative actions such as fights. Thinking positively about one, loving and showing compassion helps us to be avoiding violence actions. Positive actions also trigger a chemical in our body that makes us feel happy all the time and it can also cure illnesses.
When one practices yoga in their daily lives, it is easy for them to be guided by ahimsa. This is because yoga tends to use the mind in relaxing. This helps one in examining his/her thoughts hence using ahimsa to make a decision on how to transform negative thought to positive ones so as to prevent negative responses.
A New Look at the Bhagavad Gita is a song that was done by Krishna. In this song we find him using the word Gita which in itself it is used to represent harmlessness. This conquers with ahimsa which is represented by non-violence actions including physical, mental and emotional which can affect someone negatively. He comes out to glorify ahimsa and defines it as "knowledge as opposed to ignorance." The Gita that he uses in his song does not support any form of violence. The song also praises Ahimsa as being among the greatest responsibility that they have since they use it as a benchmark on what it is supposed to be done hence avoid violence.
The song says that individuals, who are following the Gita, are not in a position to kill anything including humans. This has enhanced ahimsa because it is about doing the things that do not hurt or harm anyone. The song not only promotes ahimsa but it also promotes characters in different texts. Krishna also says in his song that the people who are highly empowered are people who take other people to be the same and not being discriminative. This can also be seen in ahimsa whereby individuals are encouraged to love one another so as to prevent violence or harm.
In the song, there is a section where it says that to find a solution to your thoughts that are connected with any form of violence such as war or fight is in spirituality which helps in dealing with the mindset. He also explains that there are times whereby non-violence actions should be used in situations that do not need violence. This explains ahimsa whereby it does not advocate for violence activities.
When it comes to my case, I would like to benefit from areas such as positive responses in daily life, less expectation in life and practice compassion and love. In term of positive responses, I would like to do away with frustrations or disappointments. I will do this by trying to come up with other alternative solutions whenever things have not gone well as I had already anticipated them to go. This will help me control my thoughts on how I have been frustrated hence am able to prevent violence unto myself or other people.
Conclusion
I will try to adjust my expectations on my daily life. For instance, when it comes to being the best in everything that I do, I will accept any defeat that comes on my way. This will help me in control myself mentally and emotionally hence reducing the pressure that I will put on myself so as to be the best. I will love myself and the people around me, this will help me in thinking positively about other people which will prevent me from seeing people as my enemies but rather my friends. Having compassion towards other people will help me reduce the energy that I might use in hating other people hence helping me be at peace with myself.
