Over time, there has been a discussion on the importance of adhering to some of the workplace qualities that can make one avoid doing things that are contrary to the workplace code of ethics. It cannot be denied that in most organizations, hundreds of thousands of various professionals do amazing things across the world, hence making a significant impact in the workplace, building their careers as well as balancing their work needs with their families among other responsibilities. It is important to note that it is through adherence to some of the essential workplace ethics that enable individuals to prevent themselves from engaging in doing wrong things at work. Besides, these principles act as a guide to workers and therefore gives them the direction on what is required of them. It is the purpose of this essay, therefore, to discuss how adhering to workplace ethics such as honor, courage and commitment can prevent one from doing contrary to the work standards by ensuring that they remain responsible and committed to their professional duties.
It is worth mentioning that honor is one of the essential tools at work even though it viewed as an imported concept to many. Honor in itself is rated as more important than even the set of skills required of a worker (Miner & Smittick, 2016). Moreover, it cannot be denied that new skills can always be learnt, but it is true that honor can open doors to a person that skill cannot. This is because honor is a matter of the heart; it is an inner feeling that cannot be imparted through teaching or training. In this regards, through honoring the authority, it makes you stand out among many workers. Notably, it is true that honor is very rare in the modern society and especially where there are youngest working generations, and this makes one get recognition if they show signs of honor to the authority (Miner & Smittick, 2016).
Understandably, those in authority will easily recognize such a worker, and this comes with benefits. It cannot be denied that through showing honor, a worker will be noticed positively and this builds on the self-esteem of a worker thereby not engaging on doing the wrong things but instead continues to build on their positive sides to earn more praise and recognition. Besides, if a person strives hard to maintain a life of honor, such people are tipped to receive greater rewards for their efforts alongside ensuring that work standards are followed to the latter.
Also, courage is another quality that makes one avoid committing the wrong things in the workplace. It is true that with much courage and less fear, an individual worker can take on harder projects, speak up more willingly on some vital issues as well as deal better and appropriately with any changes. In a nutshell, courageous workers will always trust more, try more, and also tell more about what they know and affect them (Detert & Bruno, 2017). Therefore, as an employee in a workplace, you have to show and put courage inside the people you interact with from business owners to fellow workers. This will help to encourage them.
Consider, for example, making customer aware of problems that your business products have, admitting to having committed a mistake to an employer, advancing credit to others when you would have claimed it to yourself among other scenarios. It is bare that these are some of the very stressful situations in a workplace that have the same repercussions. As a result, courage will be necessary for going through these situations, especially when the organization values things that, as a worker, you were trained to avoid (Detert & Bruno, 2017). Therefore, showing courage is key to avoiding doing the wrong things at the workplace as it gives the impression of the ability to handle a given task. Besides, it cannot be understated that handling fear is one of the biggest problems in the workplace, and this is the reason to work; it is often tackled before attempting to address other challenges. This is because, with fear, no positive step can be made in a workplace because of the belief that one will be committing a mistake in every move they make. Furthermore, if a worker lacks the courage to attempt or the required skills and tools to complement the attempt, it makes no sense continuing with further training and education.
Consequently, having the courage to challenge the authority is equally good as having the courage to attempt doing the impossible in a workplace for a positive result. It is true that challenging employers or those in authority are very stressful, most specifically for those organizations whose workforces are deeply built-in submissive and demanding traditions. In some of the capitalist nations, it is the duty of a worker to report any discrepancy in a bid to protect the business as well as themselves all the time. Without courage, this cannot be achieved. However, it should be noted that sometimes, despite many efforts put into changing the circumstances, things still fail (Detert & Bruno, 2017). It only requires much courage to notice when an alternative course of action will be turned to that will be successful.
For this reason, ensuring courage to change is the only recipe that will enable a worker to avoid doing wrong things at the workplace by dedicating themselves to such changes. Alternatively, to be able to develop a multidimensional mindset, it requires more effort, time as well as persistence. This can only be obtained through the courage to persevere. It is true that it is challenging to keep holding to a given course, especially when expectations are not met. However, the courage to persevere helps to build faith in the mindset of a worker, faith in the probable outcome, and this help to prevent doing the wrong thing at work through positive expectations.
Lastly, adherence to commitment has been observed as one of the essential ways that can help a worker to avoid doing the wrong thing at work. Being a complex and multifaceted issue, it can take varying forms. Put, work commitment is defined as the person's adherence to the ethics of a workplace, commitment to a profession, complete job involvement, among others (Xerri & Brunetto, 2013). People can feel committed to the top management, an organization, supervisors, or even to a particular, but the most important commitment is that which encompass the whole aspect of an organization. It is worth mentioning that the failure or success of a business organization depends much on the motivation and effort of its workers. Commitment to work is an essential element that all organizations should be able to understand adversely. The level to which workers commit themselves to the goals and purposes of an organization commits to a given career has a more significant impact on the organization they are engaged with (Xerri & Brunetto, 2013). As a result of this commitment, workers will always perform to the expectations, thereby avoiding doing the wrong things at work because their strong commitments guide them.
In conclusion, it is essential to note that these three work virtues are necessary for any worker. As noticed above, honor is a crucial element that a worker has. In this regards, honoring the authority or management will mean that such a worker will also be honored and he or she will stand out among the rest. This will help in preventing doing wrong things at the workplace. Also, courage is another aspect that helps a worker to develop the feeling of possibility, thereby enabling them to perform with a conviction that everything is possible hence avoiding doing wrong things at the workplace. Lastly, a committed worker will ensure that he or she stays focused on the course of an organization's activities, thereby avoiding engaging in things that are wrong in the workplace.
