The Objective of the Proposal
This proposal seeks to study Paris as a tourist destination for families, friends, corporates and groups throughout the year. The research will include an in-depth exploration of studies on Paris to help establish the reason behind the ever-increasing number of tourists visiting the nation. The key research challenges entail a critical review of the statistical data detailing the number of visitors annually, a description of the infrastructural attractions, the local tourism market dynamics as well as the socio-cultural and economic costs of visiting Paris. In addition, the study will delve into the festivals held in Paris that make tourist families to adore the country. The activities include but are not limited to the Champs-Elysees Film Festival, 2024 Olympic Games, and festive neighborhoods such as Green Paris, Chinatown and the 11th Arrondissement (Entreprises.gouv.fr., 2018).
Background
Tourism has been a key resource for economic development in Paris. As the world's most popular tourist destination, the industry generates over 40 Billion Euros annually in form of economic benefits from tourism consumption, creating approximately 524,000 employment opportunities. With it's evident and significant growth globally, the sector is driven by an ever-increasing demand owing to the number of visiting tourists from emerging nations. In 2015, for instance, Paris received 47 million travelers and visitors including 42% non-nationals, 26%return visitors, 58%french nationals, 26% new visitors. 1/3 of the visitors were in Paris for Tourism purposes while 2/3 traveled for leisure tourism (Etoa.org, 2018).
Expected Results
The outcome of this research is expected to give the number of tourists that are particularly interested in visiting France (CVB, 2018). At the same time, the research will point out a number of some of the tourist destinations that attract many tourists to Paris. This will be clearly proven that Paris is no doubt a designated tourist point.
Paris, a leading tourist destination, owes its worldwide position in the sector to its history and exceptional assets. With unlimited tourism infrastructure, quality services, historical city and art par excellence, Paris features an unparalleled and rich cultural life, with approximately 1000 art porticos, several exhibitions, 200 museums and cultural festive activities with both regional and international appeal. The gastronomy featured in Paris has, more often than not, created a place for worldwide culinary traditions. This is a clear illustration of the cosmopolitan nature and the Parisian cultural exchange that constitute the very foundation of the hospitable spirit of the city. As a freedom city, Paris embodies tolerance, freedom of the press as well as individual freedom, embodying human rights, thus enabling the free circulation of visitors without any form of discrimination (Etoa.org, 2018).
Infrastructural developments include 2000 historical monuments that include most popular sites like the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, The Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal as well as the Arc de Triomphe whose number of tourists in 2015 was nearly 25 million. Notably, the city boasts over 14000 restaurants and cafes, 90 restaurants (Michelin-starred), and 82 gastronomic markets. The exceptional capacity to hold tourists and the city's high-quality infrastructure entails approximately 116,000 rooms making it the 2nd largest hotel in the world offering multiple and wide ranges of hospitality services. The public transport network of the city is rated among the most efficient globally with a densely interconnected network (Etoa.org, 2018).
The economic and environmental costs and benefits of the tourist numbers and activities have, over the recent years shown an increasing trend. Business tourism, however, is the driving force of the sector representing over 40% of the 48Million overnight hotel stays. Every year, Paris hosts around 400 and 1000 tradeshows and conferences respectively, channeling over 5bn Euros in Economic revenues and benefits.
With the growth of the tourism sector estimated at 4% annually, its considered the most dynamic industry worldwide and an irreplaceable driving force for the city's employment opportunities and economic benefits. However, Paris's position as a tourist destination leader attracts extremely competitive cities in the region and the international environment. Increasing competition hails from India, Russia, South Africa, China, Mexico amongst many other emerging countries (Etoa.org, 2018). The high-cost of the city as a tourist destination is a structural reason for recent challenges in the slowdown experienced in respect to the number of visitors. 2015 and 2016 were years marked by an increase in terrorist attacks in the city, and its environment posing immense challenges to the sector. The number of tourists reduced by 1.1% in 2015 and 2016 following terrorist attacks of November 2015 (Mail Online, 2014). Notably, though, the City Hall in partnership with The Foreign Affairs and International development Ministry has rolled out a renowned Tourism Stimulus Plan that has overly supported the sector in its acceleration of policies that promote the return of normal tourism numbers.
