Barrack Hussein Obama was on 4th November 2008 elected to the White House, making him the first black man to occupy the highest public office in the US. It made him the 44th president of the land of the free and home of the brave (Sherry, 2013). the United States of America. It was a brave move for Barrack, formerly the Governor of Illinois, who beat John McCain of Arizona.
This considering the fact that most of the population is made up of whites (245 million or 77.7 %). It proved that blacks, an often side-lined race, are just as capable of leadership as any other race in the world. The paper aims to rate the quality of leadership that President Barrack Obama gave during his 8-year tenure at the white house. It also aims to show what lessons African American History students can learn from Police Shootings and Blacklivesmatter movement.
A plain would be the grade that I would award President Obama in regards to his performance. First of all and most importantly, it was during his tenure that a world-famous terrorist, Osama Bin Laden was killed on 2nd May, 2011. Bin Laden was responsible for numerous crimes against humanity using terror groups Al-Qaeda, Taliban (Middle East), and Al-Shabaab (Africa). The incidents include; the infamous Twin Tower Bombings on 11th September 2001 and the US Embassy in Kenya (1998), among others.
This was a major step in bringing peace and security to Americans and the world at large. He also ended the civil war in Iraq by the US defense forces, especially the US Navy SEALs. In addition, he prevented the American economy from going into the Great Recession by lowering the rate of unemployment from 10% to 4.7% within six years and by signing the $787 billion American Recovery and Investment Act to jumpstart economic growth.
He signed the Affordable Care Act, which would provide Health Insurance to over 20 million uninsured citizens. He also, unsurprisingly, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 for his huge efforts to create international cooperation and diplomacy. These are just a few of his accomplishments that more than making him an A-material in his performance.
The Black Lives Matter Movement was born in 2013. It was sparked off by an increase in cases of racially charged discrimination and killings of black people, especially by rogue law enforcement officers, for example, the 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin by white police (George Zimmerman) and Michael Brown in Missouri in August 2014. And the choking to death of Eric Garner allegedly by NYPD (New York Police Department) in 2012. Another, Dontre Hamilton, was shot 14 times in Milwaukee by a white policeman, for causing a disturbance.
African-Americans have had a violent past at the hands of cruel white individuals. The Movie Roots depicts how blacks in 18th Century America were discriminated against to the point of slavery, torture and even, rape. The lessons are many, but the most important lesson an African American History student can learn from the police shootings is; Violence begets violence.
Conclusion
It is quite commendable that, in reaction to the shootings, the Black Community in places like the Bronx (New York) held peaceful demonstrations and formed activist groups as a peaceful protest for justice for victims and their families. Instead of retaliatory killings of the white offenders. It goes a long way to show that; one always has a choice on how to react to injustice.
