In spite of the fact that Puerto Rico has a favorable economy, many people migrate from the island to the U.S. to look for a better quality life. Additionally, Puerto Ricans migrated to the U.S. to find work as well as follow a specific career path. In most cases, Puerto Ricans migrating to the United States to improve their career chances (Morales, 2017). The first time in the U.S., Puerto Ricans speak American English, English, or both. The experience in the U.S. is divided into phases. To begin with, phase one was considered delightful because of mystery as well as exotic nature of the state. Nevertheless, when everything became normal, dislike and boredom became the norm of the day.
The final destination was in New York City. It is important to understand that the city encompasses a considerable municipal as well as regional economy in the U.S. Therefore, it is evident that NYC is the best place to be when it comes to job seeking. On the same note, the city is religiously varied and ethnically diverse. NYC is considered one of the attractive urban centers in the United States (Lankevich, 2018). In fact, this city has played a critical role in contributing to the collective consciousness of the current Americans. In simple terms, the city is regarded the largest as well as wealthiest American city; thus, a good place to be when looking for employment and business opportunities.
New York City has many common job opportunities that one can apply for. In particular, the jobs are relative to the city's populations as compared to their popularity in the available U.S. states. An immigrant from Puerto Rico can find many job opportunities to venture into depending one's expertise. For instance, a person can venture into technology, data, and innovation, finance, accounting, and procurement, as well as building operation and maintenance. What is more, one can become a personal and home care aide, law clerk, ship engineer, teacher assistant, cargo and freight agent, as well as highway maintenance worker. Precisely, NYC is a city with numerous employment opportunities depending on one's expertise.
It is evident that people in NYC are welcoming as well as treat other individuals, especially immigrants, with dignity. In fact, the city is considered the beacon of not only hope but also an opportunity for immigrants (Douty, 2012). The town holds the promise of an excellent future to many people around the globe. Precisely, NYC is a welcoming city to individuals who want to make a good life no matter where they come from. Immigrants' aspirations and dreams define New York City's culture as well as help to power its economy. Simply put, people feel welcome in the city and carry out their daily business as usual.
In spite of the availability of numerous job opportunities and welcoming nature of New York City, immigrants experience various obstacles to enhance wellbeing. To begin with, individuals face poor health status in the city. It is unfortunate that foreign-born people lack access to care when trying to prevent disorders. Additionally, individuals outside NYC experience economic pressures as well as social bonds that contribute to difficulties of leaving ones' culture behind. Many of them become stressed, and this leads to depression.
To fit in NYC, one should embrace different cultures available in the city. Particularly, communication across different cultures is the main element to live a smooth life in NYC. The way one relates to other people determines the kind of life he or she lives in the city (Douty, 2012). Therefore, immigrants should learn to accommodate different cultures and related to other people to fit in the city. New York City has many rewards for immigrants. For instance, the city rewards those individuals who follow the law. Similarly, in case an immigrant involves himself or herself in community-based programs, the city government rewards such individuals.
Conclusion
Involving myself in community-based programs was a wonderful experience. The reward was motivational, and one is ready to do it again. The reason is that community-based activities help immigrants learn different cultures and backgrounds as well as understand the way people relate to the city and the country at large. Overall, after some time in NYC, I returned to Puerto Rico to visit my family members and share my wonderful experience in the city.
