Introduction
Communication is essential in everyday activity as it helps me achieve personal goals. I observed that my interactions with other people throughout the day constitute about 80% of my daily activities. I rely on it for most of my routine day-to-day operations and decision-making. I can pass information and receive feedback regularly. It also enables me to exchange ideas through socializing and interacting with different people.
Percentage Time Spent in Communicating with Different Groups
Communication can occur in various contexts, namely dyadic, small group, and public. Among the four groups, the percentage of use was 60%, 30%, and 10% respectively. I use group interaction more often, being an extrovert. Dyadic involves dialogues with people I share interests with comes at this place. Lastly, I used public interaction the least. Public communication is one-way, and only one person is responsible for conveying information.
Percentage of Satisfaction
The goal of interacting is to satisfy human needs that fall under four categories, namely; physical, practical, identity, and social (Serbanescu, n.d). The percentage satisfaction is 50%, 30%, 15% and 5% respectively. According to the observation I made on my daily communication routine, I was able to analyze how interaction helps me fulfill these needs. The physical need, which involves psychological well-being, was the most satisfied. The practical need, which is directly linked to the purpose of conveying information, came in second place. Identity, on the other hand, enables me to gain a sense of self-awareness was the third most satisfied. Last was the social need that enables me to gain a sense of belonging.
Five Ways to Achieve Effective Communication
I have identified five ways in which I would like to improve my communication skills. They include providing feedback, active listening, being visionary, flexible, and articulate (Chinmai Sai & Praveen, 2018). Providing and receiving feedback is crucial for effective in conveying information, especially with my peers, as well as my boss. I can also learn from people when I listen more, especially with business associates. Flexibility is essential as it ensures I embrace change, for instance, at work. Providing a vision, on the other hand, ensures that I deliver my message effectively. Lastly, being articulate will help clarify my message to the intended audience, for instance, while doing a presentation.
