What are the Similarities and Differences Between Cases of Consensual Sexting and Cases Like Steubenville?
Both Steubenville case and consensual sexting are similar in that they involve adolescent youths aged 16 years to 18 years. The two cases involve the stigmatization of youths through social media as a result of sex-related issues. Also, the examples include prosecutors who put the teenagers as sex offenders and imprison them, which destroy part of their life.
Contrary, the two cases of Jane rape cases and sexting are different. Janes's fact is a rape case in which the football team boys assaulted the girl. Sexting case involves a youth like in the Cumberland case, where a 17 years boy is engaged in sexting with his girlfriend, which is termed illegal by the prosecutor.
How Do Our Sex and Gender Norms (Think Back to Week 2) Contribute to The Way We Think About These Issues/Cases?
Based on the Steubenville case, sex and gender norms do not have considerable value for women. The young football team assaulters of Jane clearly from the texts exposed in social media does not see it offensive to rape a girl. This view leads to not respecting women's rights.
Atlantic report states that "The result in many states is that it is perfectly legal for two 17-year-olds to engage daily in unprotected sex with one another, but criminal for them to have a relationship in which they abstain from sex but trade naked photographs." The view is a negative thought since, in the end, it contributes to the stigmatization of the affected youths.
How Does Rape Culture (The Normalization and Trivialization of Sexual Violence) Promote or Excuse Behavior Like What We Saw In The Steubenville Case?
Rape culture gives men the right to assault women without minding about the consequences. For example, Trent Mays openly admitted to his friends that he had assaulted Jane sexually. The fact that Trent football coach sided with the boys as well as the community around the school shows that if no one it to stand for the rights of women, then women, which include young girls, will live stigmatized.
Did You Discover, Or Are You Aware of Other Unusual Cases Involving Sexting or Social Media Violence That You Would Like to Share with Your Peers? Tell Us What We Should/Could Learn from The Case.
Yes, there are numerous social media violence cases. For example, according to Mark (2019), "On Wednesday, the Maryland Court of Appeals upheld the punishment of a minor who was prosecuted for child pornography after she distributed a video of herself performing a sex act." This case was disastrous for the rights and safety of Maryland youths. Hence, the prosecutors must consider that the minors' life would be at risk by exposing them to society.
