Introduction
The mother has a concern over teaching the moral values to the girl. Throughout the story, she cautions as well as advising her daughter against things to avoid and also those that the girl should do in life. Therefore, there are benefits of the teachings from the mother to the girl. For instance, when the daughter grows up, she will be able to handle various situations in life, making her a successful woman the mother wishes her to become. The mother teaches the girl how to clean her garments, cook the food, buy her new clothes and also eating her food modestly.
Moreover, the girl also learns various ways of interacting with people, especially the male counterparts who the mother categorizes as wharf-rat boys. Despite cautioning the daughter against the males, the mother equally prepares the daughter on how she will treat her future husband. She informs her about the best ways to iron her father's khaki shirts and pants without increasing their sizes. Hence, the mother's teachings give the best experience in life to the girl as she prepares to become a woman of a dream in society.
Why is the mum so obsessed with her daughter's sexuality?
Offering a sexuality education to the girls have a positive effect on their lives. These lessons increase the young girls' knowledge and also polishes their attitude and perception of sexually related behaviors. From the story, the mother stresses most to the girl about her interactions with the boys. She demonstrates to the daughter on hemming her dresses whenever she meets the people of her opposite sex. This action prevents her from looking like a slut or presents any sexual presentation to the males.
The mother also understands the importance of teaching her daughter about sexual behaviors as she further warns her on her conduct before the men. For instance, she suggests to the girl that if she does not behave well while interacting with men, she might become a slut. She gives the best advice to her daughter when it comes to carrying out herself before the strange men. Hence, they fail to recognize her immediately like a cheap woman the mother had warned her against becoming.
Parallel in 'today's life
Unlike in the story ''Girl'', where the mother teaches her child about morals, society today lacks such lessons to the young girls. The current mothers no longer have time for their daughters. They don't offer valuable lessons about the choices of dressing, sexuality behaviors and reproductive health, how to prepare food, what to eat, and also their interaction with men. Most importantly, there is a loss of touch between the mothers and their daughters. The two rarely meet and interact, leading to a knowledge gap that lands the young girls into more problems.
Moreover, technology and the internet has rendered the freedom to the young girls on making choices on their life. Therefore, choices that the girls make today deviate from the basic morals and values that the mother offers to the daughter in the story. The current girl child has fallen a victim of prey before men since they grow up becoming sluts. They fail to prepare the food adequately and also failing to clean the clothes and houses in the best way possible. Hence the parallel between the 'story's teachings and the word today.
