Gender identity discrimination was and is still a heated topic in the public domain, with many people perceiving LGBT practices as immoral. People who belonged to the LGBT community were widely rejected and discriminated until the Equality Act was enacted (Steinmetz, 2019). The Act articulated that all human beings are equal regardless of their race, gender, and sexual orientation. The case of Booker Muhlayasia raised several issues concerning the respectability of the Equality Act.
Dart (2019) quotes that according to HRC report it was apparent that the calamitous violence disproportionately affected transgender African American females and that the crossroads of heterosexism, racism, biophobia, sexism as well as transphobia conspired to bereave them jobs, housing, and other requirements thus making them vulnerable. The murder of Booker reveals cases of many transgender women killed in controversial circumstances. There has been a rise in the rejection of the LGBT community, especially transgender. People have slightly acknowledged the gay, lesbian and bisexual, but dislike transgender people. Even as transgender is said to be the reason for the killing of some women like Booker, racism plays a part since those most affected are women of color. The increased killings of transgender women call for action to be taken and strategies to fight it formed.
There are several strategies that can help reduce discrimination based on sexual orientation. First would be enacting clear stringent policies regarding the rights of the transgender community and punishment for those who violate the policies. Additionally, Congress should classify sexual orientation and gender identity as protected groups (Hunt, 2011). There should be increased awareness campaigns to emphasize that people are all equal despite their sexual identity. Lastly, there should be a well-laid platform on how to report discrimination cases.
Discrimination based on sexual identity has several effects. Numerous LGBT individuals have reported losing jobs or promotions which destabilize their lives. LGBT people also lose homes and are denied access to education and other social amenities. LGBT people confess that discrimination affects their social, physical, and psychological well-being (Singh and Durso, 2017). LGBT people of color are more exposed to racism than whites.
