Introduction
Jorge's perception is based on his attitude, experience, expectations, and work setting. His attitude sways him on how to look at the news about an additional nurse. Again, his experience influenced his expectations that he deserves his choice of schedule over the other nurses. Jorge wants a particular schedule that allows him outside of work, to have time for his social life and other obligations.
Marisa is influenced by her attitude, work setting, motive, and expectations. As a supervisor, she must inform Jorge that he may not get the schedule he wants or thinks he deserves. This scenario may change Jorge's dynamic or create a rift between him and the new nurses who "took his schedule." Her motive is also going to influence her perception in that she needs more employees (Adler & Proctor, 2017).
Perception-Checking Statements
Marisa to Jorge
I know you have been working on the same schedule for a long time, but I think it was okay for me to change that? Is this okay?
Jorge to Marisa
I thought because I had high sonority, I would not have to change my schedule? Do you need help?
Competency
Marisa and Jorge should improve the questions they ask. Besides, they should use conscious processing until they get to know the true perception of what is happening. This strategy will allow them not to base their final decision on inaccurate perceptions (Wester, 2009).
Suggestions
Marisa and Jorge should question the accuracy of your perceptions - Using things like "I know what I think I saw, heard, tasted, etc.? but what else should I be aware of" are examples of checking for accuracy.
They should seek clarification respectfully by perceptions checking. Verbalize what you think and see if they agree.
