Scope of the Problem
The gun control has been a process that has been going on over a period of years. The purpose of developing rules and regulations to govern gun control are numerous. Firstly the restriction of the use of guns would reduce the weapon deaths. The Daily Beast newsletter did a survey which showed that in between 2004 and 2007, guns were leading as the cause of deaths when compared to suicides, homicides and unintentional deaths. Secondly, the gun control law would ensure that women are protected from domestic abusers and stalkers. A populous study of high-income was done by Ian Ayres, Professor of Law at Yale Law School in 2003 and the result was that most of the women killed by firearms were in the United States. Thirdly, gun control will reduce the firearm theft. June 2013 Institute of Medicine report stated that all guns used in criminal acts enter circulation via initial legal transaction. The report further stated that between 2005 and 2010, over 1.4 million guns were stolen. The gun control policies are set of laws that regulate the manufacturer, seller, and user of a firearm. The policies came into being as a result of the increase in crime rate. Additionally, there seems to be sluggishness from both the government side as well as the civilians. I tend to think that if right policies are in place, gun misuse can reduce.
The report by the FBI United States in the year 2013 puts the death rate caused by guns at 12,253. According to BBC, a survey carried out in the year 2015 showed that the crime rate rose causing the death of 15,718. The death numbers simply state that there is an increase in the number of deaths caused by guns. It, therefore, implies that in the next few years, gun crime is going to rise by a wider margin if nothing is going to be done urgently.
Environmental Scan
After a series of the mass shooting in 2015, for example, the shooting at a church in Charleston which claimed nine lives and South Carolina which claimed fourteen lives at the community center in San Bernadino; the American president, Obama used his executive powers to foster change that could see gun regulation. The above proposal was rejected by the upper house rendering the gun law to remain intact. Chris W Cox, executive director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action is one of the persons who is so adamant in retaining the current policies concerning the gun control policies.
Due to the rise in the number of gun crimes, many people have come out to raise the social awareness concerning the issue. Bradly is one of the individuals who has involved himself in the social awareness campaign. The Bradley campaign dedicated network of Million Mom March Chapters in the nations largest, non-partisan, grassroots organization to prevent gun violence. Additionally, the National Rifle Association (gun rights) has vehemently defended the gun use. The group raised a campaign against the Obamas gun regulation rule. Finally, gun groups arose to protest against the statement made by Lieutenant Dan Patrick which prohibited the open carrying of handguns in Texas. The Lieutenant governor retaliated that he had more important issues to attend to rather than passing a bill concerning gun regulation.
