The Strengths and Challenges of Using A Family Systems Approach in Your Field Setting

One of the strengths of a family systems approach is that it allows substance addiction to be addressed from a holistic perspective in that the development process of the condition can be traced with input from the family members (Mason, 2012). On the contrary, the family system approach has the shortcoming of making connections with outside forces that do not relate to the family in the development of substance use disorders (Kerr, 2002). In doing so, the scope for determining the causes of a given condition is limited by a significant margin.

Nature of interaction that is preferred by clients will be based on the way the family develops one's perception of the world. Thus, it is an element that aids to create a treatment model that aligns to the individual needs of a given patient.

Viewing family as the social setting is a tenet of the family systems theory used within a therapeutic environment. An example where such a component can be used is for the case of "Patient 1," who do not have a working relationship with his family members as he is fighting substance use addiction. Thus, the technique will be used in crisis resolution by identifying common ground that creates the basis for communication between the patient and family members.
