As I went into Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, its premise amused me, and I had the hope that the movie would do proud of the sport of dodgeball. One experience that most of us can relate to was during grade school PE when we got hit by a red rubber ball on the head. The title of the movie does not state that it is a true story, but rather a story about a true underdog, and this is true. The movie is about a health club owner who is enormously incompetent and who enters a team in the $50,000 World Series Las Vegas dodgeball in an attempt to save his club from foreclosure. The team is proven to be an underdog since whereas one of the team members believe Vince Vaughn (the owner of the club) to be a pirate, another team member has not noticed this.
Despite getting run down, and being untidy, Vaughn's club still has a loyal clientele. Globo Gym, which is just across the street, is a multi-million dollar muscle center, but it has not one in its title. The gym is owned by Ben Stiller, who overreacts to the point of apoplexy as White Goodman. He also has a maniac performance that is always funny, more so as he protects against Small Man Complex through surrounding himself with several body-builders and constructing an expandable crotch in his training pants. Vaughn has lost all the hope for saving the gym until one of the clients at Joe's comes across an advert for a national dodgeball tournament in Las Vegas where the winning team takes home $50,000, which is the exact amount needed by Peter to strip off foreclosure.
There are positive elements in the story depicted by the dodgeball, and an example is a positive character of persevering against impossible odds, encouraging members of other teams to do their level best, and believing in yourself and others. There are moments of genuine compassion shown by LaFleur for the regulars at his gym by caring more about them than the money-making operation. Sexual content is also exhibited in the story from the very first scene to the last one through sexual references and images. Women in bikini pose suggestively at a carwash exposing various parts of their bodies like their breasts. After suffering a mix-up of uniforms, Joe's team wears skimpy bondage during the competition. There is also a nude obese Goodman who is seen in a photo with hidden private parts, and a statue of naked wrestlers dominating the office. There is virtually no sexual preoccupation left untouched by a dodgeball. The characters here grip on every deviancy expression, including bisexuality, homosexuality, oral sex, lesbianism, masturbation, group sex, bondage and submission, prostitution, pornography, cross-dressing, and bestiality.
Conclusion
The story also entails violent content since dodgeball is a contact sport, and the ball contacts the body. One of the most problematic scenarios is the coaching methods by one of the old dodgeballers Patches O'Houlihan. Patches believe and keep telling the players that if they can dodge a wrench, then they can dodge a ball too. The story moves predictably to a climactic dodgeball tournament. However, there are many negative things to comment about the game, but we hold up since dodgeball is a game of violence, degradation, and exclusion. Coming up with a more accurate description of this movie would, therefore, be one of the most challenging things for me to do.
