Introduction
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) comprises of an assemblage of developmental disorders whose indicators range on a gamut that runs on a scale of mild to severe. From the onset, ASD has intensively been studied. Most scholars have accepted that the time medical practitioners take to diagnosis ASD may take a little bit longer after the phase of onset. Thus, it is essential to acknowledge that detecting symptoms of ASD can be clinically somewhat lengthy. Recent studies such as that of Goin-Kochel and Myers tried to validate the phenomenon behind the autistic congenital and regressive, which is little known by many. Thus, this paper will review the studies of Goin-Kochel & Myers on their article, Congenital Versus Regressive Onset of Autism Spectrum Disorders: Parents' Beliefs About Causes.
According to Goin-Kochel and Myers (2005), on their completed online questionnaire, interview regarding the signs of this disorder, half of the respondents said that their children exhibited signs of ASD from the time they gave birth. The remaining half of respondents indicated that their kids showed signs of ASD in a regressive fashion. These two individuals' findings on the subject of ASD signs can never be disputed. ASD's cause indeed remains unknown, but most studies indicate that ASD has strong links to the following. First, ASD comprises of substantial genetic factors documented to have specific roles that help in developing and nurturing the ASDs. Secondly, environmental factors equally play a significant role in the development of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Thus, according to Goin-Kochel and Myer's (2005) findings, the autistic emergence takes two forms; regressive and congenital, with timing being the crucial distinction amongst the two. Goin-Kochel and Myers (2005) affirm that congenital has an appearance of autistic signs from birth or soon afterward. They further state that children who start developing autism congenitally presents an unusual behavior and developmental delays from the onset. On the other hand, this study indicates that children with a regressive fashion depict signs of autism following a typical development period. The kids tend to be labeled as normally evolving until a particular age at which they start losing the formerly acquired skills and begin to fail their progress after that.
Reviewing this study of Goin-Kochel and Myers, it is pretty clear that a substantial percentage of kids with autism established the condition following a lengthy period of seemingly typical development, regressive or signs of appearance from birth or shortly afterward, congenital.
