I did visit the National Gallery of Art on April 21 and April 22. The National Gallery of Art is located in Washington DC. The National Gallery of Art houses many works of art about. The event that I attended was about Renaissance era art.
I did attend the event as part of a group of students who had successfully taken part in essay competition about Renaissance art. Winners of the essay competition were accorded an opportunity to visit the National Gallery of Art and attend the Renaissance era art event. My initial reaction upon attending the event was a mixture of awe and excitement
I was enthralled by two pieces of fine art during the event. I was enchanted by Leonardo da Vincis artwork known as The Last Supper and Michelangelos The Last Judgment. The two artworks made me realize that during the Renaissance era, people were more religious than people in the contemporary society. The two artworks have been embraced by contemporary Christians as true representations of the Last Supper and the Last judgment. The Last Supper is a representation of the last meal that Jesus Christ shared with his disciples before he was betrayed by Judas Iscariot and taken away by Roman officials for crucifixion. During the Last Supper, Jesus Christ hinted that one of his disciples would betray him and all of his disciples would deny him when asked by Roman officials if he was their acquaintance. The Last Judgment is a representation of the day Jesus Christ will come back on earth to judge human beings pegged on the life that they lived. Michelangelo creates an impression that during the Last Judgment, Jesus will separate righteous people from sinners. Sinners will then be put under eternal damnation. On the other hand, righteous people will ascend to heaven with Jesus Christ and eternally live in paradise (Charles et al., 2014).
My overall reaction after attending the event was a mixture of ecstasy and longing to go back to the museum so that I could attend other events. After attending the event, I felt that I had spent quality time attending the event. I was enriched with knowledge about Renaissance art. The tour guides were knowledgeable about Renaissance art, and they were also very friendly. I admired the tour guides grasp of historical information about the Renaissance era.
I did experience firsthand, the connection that exists between things that I did observe in the museum about the Renaissance era and the knowledge I had gained in class about the Renaissance era. The Renaissance era refers to a period between 1300 and 1700. It was a period of great rebirth in Europe regarding civilization. Events during Middle Ages had set a foundation for events that happened during the Renaissance era. There were profound political, academic and social transformations during the last years of the Renaissance. The transformations played a major role in bringing up a new spate of civilization during the Renaissance era. Renaissance art was in the form of paintings, decorative arts, and sculptures. I had to concur with my history lecturer that indeed the Renaissance era was a period of profound social and political transformation after attending the event. Based on the artworks that we were shown during the event, I could discern that during the Renaissance era, people were concerned about improving the quality of their lives.
