Dear Representative Micah Gravley,
It brings me great pleasure that you have taken your time to go through this letter. It has come to my attention that Bill No. H.R. 1538 is before the house, and I would like to bring to light the issues as I see them. The bill seeks to encourage the United States Congress to come up with a mechanism through which the presidency can be capped on the matter of the first use of nuclear weapons. I, therefore, hope that you will accord all the necessary support to the bill when it comes to the floor of the house. Once passed the Act will help to foster a feeling of security especially now that there are ever-increasing threats to the U.S. that could lead to nuclear war.
Currently, their majority of people who think that the president is given too much power to decide the fate of the people. Without proper checks, these powers bestowed on him can be abused and lead to nuclear fallout. As of now, the president can decide to unilaterally attack a country by use of nuclear weapons without consulting any other authority or person. Any such strike on a nuclear-weapons-armed country such as Russia or China is likely to result in a retaliatory attack in the U.S and possibly Atlanta. The repercussions for such an attack is therefore near complete destruction of Atlanta Metropolitan and the nearby environment. Estimates for a single attack on metro Atlanta give a fatality of more than 1.3 million and injury to about 1.4 million people. Therefore, it is prudent that you be in the forefront in passing this resolution not only for the sake of your constituents in Georgia but the good of all Americans.
Apart from the loss of life, a detonation of a nuclear weapon can also lead to the destruction of the environment and the economy. The place will become unusable with the death of many plant and animal species and other organisms. Without all these organisms then the environment will be affected negatively and farmers cannot even be able to farm in the foreseeable future. The land will never be the same again after such destruction. On the economic front, a lot of property will be lost, and many businesses will cease through the region. These people will also be in dire need of financial and humanitarian help which will deplete government covers.
The U.S has been touted as one of the most democratic countries in the world and a pillar for good governance and Transparency. As a democracy, we, therefore, have to ensure that all the practices that ensure those in a position of power adhere to set down regulations. I, therefore, urge you to push for the establishment of such a system to deter reckless actions in the future that may have dire consequences. Many of the other government offices and officers are placed under check and balances. It is therefore crucial that the president is not given immense powers without checks and balances.
However, I have to say the issue of retaliation requires acting with speed and thus can be left to the discretion of the president when needed. Otherwise to order a first strike nuclear attack on another country should be a discussion that is decided by a majority of stakeholders and when it is vital. I have heard discussions among friends and fore alike on their thought in the case of a nuclear attack, and I have to say many cannot comprehend this happening.
Thank you a lot for your consideration and the time you have accorded to reading this letter. I hope you will reflect on my ideas as you decide on the way forward.
Thank you
Sincerely,
First name
