Definition of Communication Studies
Communication studies entail an academic discipline dealing with the activities and processes of human communication. In most of the cases, communication studies or communication sciences deliver a significant share with the cultural studies elaborating an interest in how messages may be interpreted through different dimensions. These dimensions include; cultural, economic, social, political, and hermeneutic, among other aspects. The communication sciences may be used in examining different actions affect context, for instance, in quantitative communication, communication sciences help explore statistics to deliver a given outcome concerning a specified occurrence (Fiske, 2010).
According to Fiske (2010), communication studies encompass the aspects of both humanities and social science. As humanity, the field of communication deals with persuasion and rhetoric. The perspective overlap with philosophy, English, and cultural studies. On the other hand, from the social science perspective, the field of communication overlaps political science, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and economics. Currently, the state of the field of communication is significantly developing as people can understand what the field includes and its importance in interaction and building the society as a whole. With the current digital economy, a shift towards mass media, and social networking, it is creating a significant impact in the communication field as it interacts with other areas.
View on the Current State of the Field Of Communication
Since there are three types of communication; (verbal, written and nonverbal communication) there have been different views on the current state of the field of communication studies. Verbal communication involves interacting and listening to an individual to understand the message they are trying to deliver. In written communication, the information to be communicated is passed along through reading while nonverbal communication accumulates observation of an individual and acquiring a specific message. The field may gather different topic ranging from face-to-face interaction to others. In my view concerning the current state of the field of communication, the area is playing a significant role especially in taking the different steps meant to help build better communication. There is a current trend regarding the development of communication and a primary need for the event which is posing a significant impact on the nature of the field (Fiske, 2010).
As a cornerstone of the society, in what we call the "transmission" view, communication is linking the transmission of messages majorly via technology with the composition of the information. Today, the field is aligning with other areas delivering a significant dominance like communication and other critical aspects portraying on the ubiquity of communication. Although communication is equally developing, it is a crucial sector that needs proper observation as things could turn out differently if not well overseen and considered. For example, since people are now relying on communication especially in delivering their grievances, a problem may arise one way the other. The intervention seeks to help people understand the different dynamics within the field of communication.
Key Topics in the Study of Communication
Communication and media science has emerged as a critical field of study concerned with tailoring the way individuals communicate to different happenings and applications. In the area and research of communication, some of the vital topics may include the essence of communication, branches of communication, theories of communication, and the history of communication. In consideration regarding the subject of the nature of communication, it entails the communication theories, development communication and also information. The topic does not only provide a basis for the provisions of communication but delivers a justification concerning how communication is imperative. It also provides a basis for the use of communication alongside elaborating on the current state of the field of communication (Stacks & Salwen, 2014).
Correspondingly, the branches of communication is another crucial topic in the study of communication. The branches of communication entail both the types of communication and fields of communication. These types of communication include; (intercultural communication, international communication, interpersonal and intrapersonal communication, mass, nonverbal, and organizational communication). In the definition of these types of communication, intercultural communication studies communication across different social groups and culture while international communication involves communication occurring across borders. On the other hand, interpersonal communication included interaction between two individuals, intrapersonal communication involving communication within an individual, mass communication, involving how people interact in social media among other practices.
Additionally, the study communication entails the fields of communication as a critical topic. The area of communication includes the types of communication along with other fields such as cognitive linguistics, political communication, science communication, sociolinguistics, among other fields. With the involvement of the kinds of communication as key topics in the study of communication, the theories of communication is another crucial topic which may include; (agenda-setting theory, critical theory, cultural studies, information theory, among others). The agenda-setting theory described the capacity of media to influence a specific public agenda with the agenda involving a social science theory. The critical theory applied the knowledge from social sciences and humanities and elaborated on the aspects of communication and culture. The cultural studies theory attempts to engage in political dynamics of contemporary culture with information theory dining the storage and communication of information. These key topics pose a significant effect in describing the current state of the field of communication especially by elaborating on the critical factors and illustrating the details of communication science. Although the field of communication studies accumulates of a vast collection of concepts, most of the vital topics revolve around the types of communication, theories of communication and also the fields of communication (Hartley, 2012).
Evolution of the Field Of Communications in the Future
Communication is playing a role in all information that is exchanged between individuals and other living species. In the recent, we are at a position wherein case of an issue in the field of communication; people raise different feelings. In consideration of the evolution of the field of communication into the future, it combines things that are technically possible along with what may be desirable socially. In the field, the technology advancements determine the level of possibilities while the needs of people about the area of communication determine the technology that will remain a fact in life. Regardless of the utilization of new tools of communication (such as fax and WAP), people do not seem satisfied with the nature of communication or the field. Majorly, people need interventions that deliver less noise, easy to utilize and access, more content and have a better delivery of information. Also, people want to communicate freely without feeling that someone is overlooking their communication and that the message does not end up with other people. They are aspiring to interact faster and on a larger scale which has been a manager influence on the evolution in the field of communication in the future.
In the future, the field of communication is likely to evolve towards the creation of better technologies especially by creating automated technologies that increase the number of tasks carried out. In most of the cases, the technologies aimed at creating more communication tools that advance the entire field of communication. People are understating the needs for better technologies in the field of communication which is posing a much drive to the evolution of the field of communication. Moreover, there are early views of such technology (such as the Apple's Siri and Samsung's S-voice) which allows people to deliver voice messages rather than typing. Since there are different platforms of communication, there are higher chances that a minimal change in the operations of this could impose a significant impact on the entire field.
For the longest time now, the field of communication has remained stagnant as people never felt the urge to develop and evolve. However, recently, there has been a significant drive for increasing and changing the field as individuals have an understanding concerning the importance of the area at all levels. With the development of internet and the WEB, people now have different platforms to address the world ranging from personal issues to political issues. Similarly, there is an excellent availability of audience, and the information can easily reach the meant audience. Communication is majorly controlling the shift of events (such as politics) which is now delivering a significant push into evolving and making the field of communication a better platform along with creating individuals with expertise to help manage the broad sectors of communication. The communication is not only likely to evolve through developing technologies, but it is also changing the social structure regarding a given set of activities.
