Introduction
Many organizations have integrated Computer Numeric control systems in their operations within the last few years. Although the decision to do so was partly to reap the benefits that came along with the use of the systems, several challenges also fueled their adoption. For instance, stationary machines in the aviation industry caused downtime, which led to a backlog in aircraft production. The systems are also able to improve their usefulness and significance by playing the role of two or more machines. The growth in use over the last few years has also been faced with several challenges. The following paper discusses some advantages and disadvantages of the application of CNC systems in manufacturing.
Advantages
The use of CNC systems has several advantages to the manufacturing industry. First, the systems reduce downtime and act as a powerful support tool for operators in various fields. There exist mobile CNC machines that can be moved to areas where they are needed. Secondly, there is an increased machining speed by automating them. Automation allows the system to increase precision levels, therefore increasing the quality of the results (Kalyakulin et al., 2020). The ease of movement from one place to another increases the efficiency of the systems by reducing the workload of applying similar systems in different areas. Therefore, the introduction of the systems means that tools do the moving around while the materials or objects being cut remain stationary, reducing the amount or possibility of errors.
CNC systems also provide more control to the manufacturers. Large manufacturing organizations manage the machining of complicated and delicate components by acquiring them from shops that specialize in machines. The size of the systems allows in house management of tasks, therefore increasing efficiency. CNS systems have aided in the integration of manufacturing processes and machines with computer-aided designs and manufacturing platforms. CNC systems also create opportunities for original equipment manufacturers. The above advantages have been responsible for the increased use of the systems in manufacturing processes.
Shortcomings
Although CNC systems have presented many advantages, they also bear several shortcomings. First, CNC machines are expensive and out of reach for small and upcoming manufacturing plants. Therefore, the plants are unable to compete favorably with organizations that can afford the systems. The machines also require operators with high levels of skills. Therefore it is challenging for organizations to find a competent and skilled individual to run the systems. The increased use of the systems in manufacturing plants has led to the loss of jobs by individuals who initially controlled manual machines. The loss of jobs has, in turn, affected their financial wellbeing and that of their families. Also, many countries that have adopted the use of CNC systems and machines have stopped teaching students the use of manual systems. Therefore, the skill is increasingly becoming extinct and forcing people to over-rely on the systems.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the use of CNC systems in manufacturing has had both positive and negative effects. For instance, the use of the systems reduces downtime in various industries and act as powerful support tools for operators. Also, the systems increase the efficiency of the systems and allow the manufacturers more control of the systems. However, several disadvantages can also be attributed to the increased use of the systems. First, CNC machines are expensive and might therefore be out of reach for small manufacturing plants. Also, the adoption of the system has led to a loss of jobs, therefore affecting the financial wellbeing of many families.
