Issue Overview and Identification

There are various issues that the Brentwood City Police Department faces during its operations. However, in all the issues, property crimes stand out to be the main issue that the agency is trying to deal with in its operation (Iwanski et al., 2010). Besides, a property crime can vary from an offense that is considered to be minor such as shoplifting and vandalism. The reason as to why these crimes are considered minor is because it can be easily be dealt with and does not lead to the loss of life of an individual (Iwanski et al., 2010). Nevertheless, the high-level crimes or serious offenses are robberies with violence and arson. The reason as to why these crimes are considered high-level is because they can lead to the loss of life to the property owner, the offender, and the police officer (Iwanski et al., 2010). Consequently, some property crimes do not need the coming to contact between the offender and the victim. Some such as burglary just require the unlawful entry into a premise with the criminal intention. According to the criminal investigation and study conducted by the Brentwood City Department of Police, the numbers show that the property crime occupies the number one position in the statistics of crime (Iwanski et al., 2010).

However, there are various methods that the police department can use to prevent the property crime in the city. The first method is the implementation of community policing. The reason is that the implementation of this strategy in a small town like Brentwood would play a critical part in the property crime prevention (Iwanski et al., 2010). In this case, the residents of the community are in a good position to come up with a rapport with the police department. Besides, this strategy is essential that the residents would know the perpetrators of crime and where they hide because they usually interact with them. The neighborhood watch is the second strategy that would be an effective strategy that would help in the fight against the rise of property crimes in the town (Iwanski et al., 2010). The reason is that it strengthens ties within the community and improves the relationship between the residents of a community. The application of the CCTV Cameras and improvement of the lighting system within the streets are also essential in fighting the property crime.

Community Demographic

Property crime is a serious issue in Brentwood. This issue affects all the residents in the town and it cut across, ages, gender, and social status in the community. The reason is that it affects the old and the young, the poor and the rich, and females and males among other categories in the society. The City of Brentwood, CA police purposes to serve all population in the town to sort out this problem (Iwanski et al., 2010). The reason is that the primary objective of the agency is to enhance and protect the quality of life in this community through uncompromised innovative, integrity, professionalism, and dedication of police services.

Issue Impact

The impacts of this crime can last over an extended period irrespective of the seriousness of property crime. Some individuals cope relatively well with the crime with other people can develop minor effects from the offense (Iwanski et al., 2010). Property crime is similar to other crimes. People are usually attached to wealth; therefore, people will be affected by the property crime due to the amount of wealth they have lost. People who are directly or indirectly affected by the property crime can develop same emotional experiences similar to the victims because they have developed concerns about the victim. In other terms, there are some psychological effects such as anger, depression, and fear that might make a person have a flashback to the crime, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and sleeplessness (Iwanski et al., 2010).

There are direct cost and inconveniences that may arise due to the property loss. It also minimizes the social life of an individual because they would want to relocate from the area they fell, victims. The victim may also incur physical injuries particularly if this property was taken through the application of force (Iwanski et al., 2010). Besides, the victims of this crime may develop anxiety due to the shock that he or she will develop from the loss of property and may even lose trust in the community.
