Introduction
Regarding the increase in the number of careers in recreation and sport management among college students, it has become necessary to investigate some career opportunities in this field. The industry associated with Recreation and Sports Management has become large and even more attractive, considering the planning that has been enforced. An essential part of the human resources team is attracted to sports and has recognized it as any other profession. Owners and managers in sports institutions have a strong orientation towards sport and great interest in leisure. Graduates in Sport Management work in; professional sports, state and national organizations, marketing consulting firms, and in government agencies for sports at the state, federal and local levels (Mathner, Robert and Martin 21). Other opportunities in the recreation and sports field are; in facilities and major events. The role of a Sports Professional lies in the organization and administration of sport in local communities, including some weekly contests and elite level sports. This paper focuses on investigating the career opportunity of being a School teacher in Physical education, in the profession of recreation and sport management.
Physical Education School Teacher
Physical education teachers assist students in improving their physical development and promoting healthy lifestyles. A significant requirement for this job is a bachelor's degree in Recreation and Sports management and teaching license. In the United States, obesity is one of the ultimate reasons why middle school student-athletes drop out of elite sports. One of the areas that have been emphasized to reduce this problem is the introduction of Physical Education in the classroom. Physical education has many benefits to both students and the general public. In a school setting, the physical education program serves society in many ways when it is properly implemented and utilized (DeSensi et al. 21). Physical education helps and affects student's positively in many ways, including; improvement of their skill related components such as agility, speed, balance and coordination. It assists the society and the students in improving their endurance, flexibility, strength and respiratory activities.
Physical education teachers have a responsibility to promote a positive and healthy learning environment. A healthy environment for learning is created and maintained when a physical education teacher provides positive and constructive feedback to learners. A prepared physical education teacher can provide organized physical activities and can establish clear expectations which will guide students in positively responding to the environment. Physical education equips students with the chance to develop their emotional, social, and cognitive skills which occurs when a sports team participates in adventure activities, physical fitness activities and problem-solving activities. Studies have indicated that a lack of physical activities participation leads to increased levels of body fat and childhood obesity (DeSensi et al. 21). That is what preventive measures have to be taken to reduce health risk factors in the future. Students who take part in daily physical activities within the school setting achieve excellent health benefits which are needed to be physically fit. Teachers have reported that students who take part in physical activities are alert and more focused in class. Physical education teachers ensure that they give students motivation on the improvement of their abilities, and increase their intrinsic motivation.
Given that curricula in the United States are determined at the local level, physical education is taught in many structures and forms with various curricula models being utilized in; movement education, instruction, fitness education and sports education. Engaging in physical activities takes two aspects, the first one involves the adoption of fitness education curricula in-class physical activities while the second involves consideration of physical fitness at the basis of a skill needed to be leaned by students, and a lesson that is planned for them. A new curricula approach puts more emphasis on teaching students the science behind the importance of being physically active in their lives. This curriculum is modelled in such a way that students take part in physical activities which show vital knowledge in science (DeSensi et al. 21). The conceptual framework of the fitness education program model is formed around the wellness-related components. A variety of physical fitness education curricular based on concept exists in senior high school and middle-class levels. It has been assumed that most children can attain a health-improving level of fitness, by participation in continuous intense to moderate intensity physical activities. Fitness education in schools is getting more enhanced by the inclusion of active video games that are also referred to as exergaming. These games have been incorporated in student fitness levels and well guided by the physical education teachers.
Qualifications
The instructional qualifications for a physical education teacher include an excellent demonstration of fitness techniques. The teacher should show competency in methods of performing a variety of moderate to vigorous physical activities, including; technique in developing flexibility, safety techniques and technique in developing cardiovascular fitness. The instructor should portray knowledge in understanding of the fitness components, strategies, principles, and differences among individuals who are needed for a student to take part in and maintain a wellness-enhancing fitness level. The knowledge is inclusive of; benefits and dangers of physical inactivity, physiological responses to physical activity and health-related components (Chelladurai 27). Experience required also includes; basic physiology and anatomy, workout elements and training principles, such as overload, progression and specificity and application of factors which affect choices of physical activities.
A physical education teacher should take part frequently in physical activities such as aerobic, bone strength, personal and social enjoyment, muscle endurance and strength. The teacher should be able to come up with an individualized physical activity schedule, and self-monitor physical activities and have adherence to the physical activity plan. The physical education teacher must maintain a health-enhancing level of health-related fitness, including self-assessment and analysis. He or she should set goals and come up with a fitness improvement plan for students, and work to improve their fitness components (Chelladurai 20). The teacher should have an adjustment plan and must achieve the goals set.
A physical education teacher has a responsibility to show responsible social and personal behaviours that include; stress management, self-management, individual strategies to manage their body weight and respect of differences. The PE teacher has excellent value for disease prevention, challenge, enjoyment, self-efficacy, self-expression, and can allocate energy towards the production of a healthy environment. The PE teacher strives to keep up with a healthy diet through planning, frequent monitoring and knowledge (Chelladurai 27). Another qualification in this field is the ability to make a difference between facts and fictions that regard fitness products and help students make an excellent decision about consumer products.
Conclusion
Students who study Recreation and sports management prepare themselves for the career in being a physical education teacher among other fields out there (Pits 5). The area of Sports and Recreation management is a fast-growing field that has created jobs for more than five hundred billion graduates in recent years. When studying recreation and sports, students learn many subjects in the classroom, and they gain practical experience that enhances them in the real world. They gain firsthand experience on how the sports world operates, and knowledge on internships, networking with alums and prominent sports figures and job shadowing. This field equips students with a broad understanding of the sports world.
