Introduction
Businesses that include new technological and innovative techniques are able to survive and thrive in their respective markets in a competitive manner. The implementation of information systems in businesses and companies make work easier for them as they play a major role in controlling the internal and external operations and processes. There is a growing need for companies need information systems to store their data in a more convenient and accessible way. In addition, information systems in companies simplify decision-making processes as they ease the delivery and accessibility of information options required to instantly make the required decisions. This paper will discuss two selected information solution systems.
Cloud Computing
Srinivas, Venkata, and Moiz in their research article Cloud computing basics, refer to cloud computing as a multifaceted information system with the ability to support a broad-spectrum of applications. It is a model that allows for a convenient access of a shared pool of computing resources that are configurable, for example storage, servers, networks, services, and applications. The cloud computing system can be rapidly released and provisioned with minimal interaction from the provider of the server and management effort. Cloud computing is emerging as a popular cost effective model for organizations and businesses as it provides an easy access to externalized information system resources that are cheap or affordable (Srinivas, Reddy, & Qyser, 2012).
As a mid-to-upper level employee in the medium-to-large aviation related business with a significant decision making influence in the company, my choice on cloud computing models or technology will depend on the rapid elasticity, measure of service, network access, resource pooling and on demand service characteristics the solution model offers. According to Srinivas, Reddy, & Qyser, (2012), the on-demand-service features in the cloud computing system provide unilaterally potential provision automatically as needed without any human interaction with the system's service provider. The cloud computing on-demand-self-service capabilities include server time, and network storage. As a mid-top level positioned employee in the company that can influence decisions, the on-demand-self-service would be a prioritized consideration of the system's features during the selection of a cloud computing system as it will enhance efficiency in the company.
More, to increase efficiency in the company, I would consider the model's broad network access, that is, the availability and access of the model's capabilities over the network through standard mechanisms. This is because; the access and the availability of the model's capabilities promote the use of both thick and thin platforms such as personal digital assistants. Another essential characteristic of a cloud computing to look out for as an influencer of decisions in the company, is the resource pooling. In a cloud computing model, the ability to serve multiple employees or consumers with different virtual and physical resources that are dynamic in nature, and can be assigned or re-assigned according to the needs of the employees in the company or consumer demand gives the company's employees and consumers a sense of location independence. For this reason, the resource pooling feature in cloud computing solution models enable the employees or clients to access the available resources like the company networks, virtual applications or machines and storage despite their location or distance (Srinivas, Reddy, & Qyser, 2012)
Rapid elasticity and Measure of service are two more characteristics or features to consider when drilling down to the specifics of information systems like cloud computing. In their research article, Srinivas, Reddy, & Qyser put forward that capabilities of information systems can be elastically and rapidly provisioned. An excellent and efficient cloud computing system should have unlimited provisioning for the company. In addition, the system should automatically optimize and control the available resources by leveraging metering capabilities in some abstraction levels appropriate to the type of service offered in the company (Srinivas, Reddy, & Qyser, 2012). This capability in a cloud computing system is known as the measuring service, and should be considered as an important feature in cloud computing systems for use in the company.
Database Management System
A database management system is an information system designed to manipulate, retrieve, manage and define data in a database. Morley and Parker's article; Databases and database management systems, states that a database management system is used to access, create, and maintain databases. database management systems are associated with low levels of redundancy, increased data accuracy, ad lower storage requirements compared to other information systems. Database management systems also have a faster response making them more efficient to work with in companies. However, they have an increased vulnerability in terms of backup (Morley, & Parker, 2009).
For database management systems, a mid-to-upper level employee with a significant decision making influence in a medium-to-large company should consider the integrity of the system, its security, and the privacy issues that may be associated with the database management system. The data integrity of the database management system concerns the system's accuracy of data, database locking, and data validation processes (Morley, & Parker, 2009). In a database management system, the accuracy of the data depends on the quality of information generated by the system. This is reliant on the quality of data entered in to the database system. Data integrity in a database management system is heavily reliant on the validity of the data. According to (Morley, & Parker, 2009), data validation is the process of ensuring the validity of the data fed in to the database management system. It involves checking the respective fields before changes to a record are saved in the system. Hence, as an employee with a significant influence on decision making in the company, the consideration and implementation of mechanisms which will ensure that employees warrant accuracy and validity of the data fed into the database management is my responsibility.
Further, as the company's decision influencer, the selection of a database management system with the best security features such as protection of data in the system against misuse, protection against data loss, unauthorized access and prevention of data loss falls under my jurisdiction. Other security features in the database management system that may serve the company's interests are strict and efficient disaster recovery or backup procedures. The database management systems should also have cloud and in-house database features (Morley, & Parker, 2009).
Conclusion
In conclusion, as an employee with an influence in decision making in the company, the consideration of privacy issues associated with database management systems and how to handle or contain them on occurrence should be prioritized. This is because there is a growing concern of the vast amounts of data stored in database systems. Moreover, data breaches associated with database management systems are expensive, and may cause businesses to make losses if not properly handled.
