Introduction
In the pursuit of a good, peaceful, and fulfilling life, we often come across challenges. The obstacles make our success meaningful. Poetry and music have been part of human life for a long time, and through music artists and poets, we see through the society and life's tribulations surrounding us. Today's music industry has become not only a source of income for many but also an avenue for people to express themselves about the issues of life. In the music industry, Aubrey Drake Graham, popularly known as Drake, is a Canadian artist and is among the best-selling music artists. Drake is known for rapping, singing, songwriting, record producing, acting, and business. Drake's music not only thrives in the entertainment section but also sends powerful messages to society. Among his songs are God's plan and when to say when. Drake expresses his concerns about society's way of thinking through his music.
People will always have opinions about other people. Some even go to the extent of suggesting how someone else's life should be. However, people's perceptions should not hinder us from living our lives according to our terms. The song God's Plan is a message by Drake to the society, which includes his fans, fellow artists, and the public, in general, depicting his gratitude to God for all his achievements and recognizing that not everyone is happy for him. I like the way Graham, La Tour, Jackson, Samuels, and Shebib (2017) bring out the jealousy aspect of human beings when he says, "Bad things. It's a lot of bad things. That they wishin' and wishin' and wishin' and wishin'. They wishin' on me." Drake believes the society wishes for his downfall. I also like that Graham et al. (2017) acknowledge God as the guide in the line, "God's plan, God's plan I can't do this on my own, ay, no, ay."He believes that his success is through God's intervention. Drake is also of the view that whatever has happened in his life and career so far is all part of God's plan for him. Listening to this song reminds me of my life challenges, and I support his jealousy claims, as people are not always going to like you. However, I feel that what people think about us or wish for us should not be our lives' focus.
Humanity no longer has a place in society, and what stands tall is the quantity and not quality. In the song, when to say when, Graham (2020) says, "Somebody hit me today, and they were like: "Nah, just make sure, you know. You tell me what to do when I get there, you know?... I respect it, no problem I got all these blessings, just to give it to others anyway. Know what I'm sayin'? Yeah, my hands always open, for real." I trust that Drake, through this song, explained clearly the fact that people take advantage of others, indicating that humanity is lost, and all that is left is deceit. The title of the song when to say when is symbolic for it depicts people not understanding that timing is everything in the bid for success. Graham (2020) also says, "Look, we can argue back and forth, but who's the richer man? Isn't that what matters in this world that we livin' in?" This statement indicates that Drake perceives society to regard wealth as what defines the world. If one has money, then everything else falls in line. If one has no wealth, then they do not get a say even if they are right. I agree with Drake on this because I believe that the world we live in today only concentrates on people of power. Power is associated with wealth, which means if you have money, people listen to you and value you, and this indicates that quantity carries more weight over quality. Drake's when to say when is a true reflection of our society today where the money comes first, the truth does not matter, and people will take advantage of you as long as it serves their purpose. Life is a struggle, and it is upon us as members of society to make efforts to support one another and alleviating each other's problems.
