Introduction
Linda Qiu's article on the New York Times titled, Before Trump's State of the Union, a Look at How Last Year's Promises Fared, highlights the changes that have taken place in the country after the President promised to introduce reforms in different sectors. The event highlights the state of the nation, one year after the President of the United States, Trump, promised that he would pass an immigration overhaul, transform the country's infrastructure, and reduce the prices of drugs. The President's vision to introduce changes in the immigration system would improve and reduce the number of illegal immigrants in the country. President Trump assured Americans that he would put the needs of the country first and prioritize them as he focused on improving the state of the nation both in the short-term and in the long-term. This article evaluates whether the President has managed to fulfill the promises he made last year in 2018.
The event is directly connected to content that has been introduced in class (Qiu). For instance, political efficacy, which has been introduced in class stipulates that the government in office must engage in activities that positively contribute to the welfare of all American citizens. President's Trump decision to address areas that have triggered conflict in the past is an indication that he has the interests of Americans at heart. Positioning America as a republic that has laws regarding the immigration process affirms that the country is guided by a Constitution, which the President must protect and uphold during his or her term in office. The President's move towards introducing changes and reforms in the country that will improve the services citizens access from the government confirms that the regime adopts an authoritarian leadership approach.
The government in office recognizes that America's economic performance depends on trade activities (Qiu). This justifies President Trump's promise to introduce reforms in trade deals and agreements. The main reason why the bad trade deals were fixed was to protect the interest of workers who invest their time and resources in the business. For instance, President Trump introduced changes in the trade deal between America and South Korea, which in turn helped improve the probability of Americans benefitting from their intellectual property. The concept of Free Market Capitalism is applicable in the trade activities between America and its business partners. Protecting the intellectual property of Americans is important as it prevents illegal business partners from taking advantage of the innovativeness and creativeness of individuals that generate unique ideas.
I think the event was relevant to access whether the President had fulfilled the promises he had made when he ascended into power. Americans deserve actual results and improvements in every sector in the country. For instance, the President's promise to improve the health care system was fulfilled since he had mentioned that individuals suffering from terminal illnesses would not need to travel to other nations for treatment had been fulfilled. This was an indication that the government was investing resources in the medical industry to ensure that all citizens enjoy quality healthcare (Qiu). I think that since the President had managed to achieve most of the things he had promised the Americans within one year is an indication that he will fulfill the rest before his presidential term ends. The justification for checking whether improvements or changes have been introduced to in the country as promised by the president is a strategy that affirms the leader must be accountable.
