Annotated Bibliography: Internet Addiction on Colleges

Introduction

According to Jonathan (p.11-17), internet addiction refers to a person's inability to limit and control internet use interfering with an individual's ability to lead a healthy life, over 3.8 billion people in the world use internet. Through the use of the internet, many people, for instance, college students can benefit through online learning programs where they can easily access learning tools and read at their own pace without attending college. However, too much usage of internet has negative effects since it results in internet addiction. Websites like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and other social networking sites usage have blown up among college students leading to a high number of internet addiction among the students (Jonathan, p.11-17). In the past years, internet addiction among college students has become a very controversial and important topic with many medical professionals terming it as an issue of concern. In this bibliography, some of the articles I have been using in my research about internet addiction have been described and evaluated.

In this research summary, Hilarie Cash, Ann H Steel ,Cosette D Rae and Alexander Winkler give a discussion on internet addiction and what is like to have internet addiction disorder, the effects of the addiction, how it can be diagnosed and various treatment measures which can be put in place to help in dealing with internet addiction. This summary is explained in a manner that the content is precise and straightforward for apparent reading and understanding. I find their work good for my research because they have considered whether to classify internet addiction as a disorder or not to classify as a disorder giving important opinions about the issue. Winkler is part of psychotherapy department in Marburg University, German while Rae, Steele, and Cash are from "reStart Internet Addiction Recovery Program" that is why I find this source credible because they are in an environment surrounded by people with such issues.

Sarao, Teena, and Poonam Sharma. "A study of internet addiction among college students."(2017):422-424.

In this article, Teena Sarao and Poonam Sharma explain how easy internet access has influenced the lives of many college students resulting to "Internet Addiction" which is a vulnerable group among the other groups of internet users. Sarao and Sharma accomplish getting their points through by presenting a detailed study investigating the relationship between the locus of control in many college students and the problem of internet usage. Sarao is a scholar and Sharma a supervisor both at the Mewar University, Chittorgarh Rajasthan India; hence they have interacted with different students addicted to the internet in the University. I have found their work beneficial to my research because they give useful information with a subtopic in each discussion making the ideas relatable to speak out and include in my research.

Orenstein, Peggy. "Growing up on Facebook." New York Times 10 (2009).

In this article, Peggy Orenstein addresses how the young people are becoming to become more techno literate leading to internet addiction using her nieces who have moved way from college as an example. Orenstein explains that facebook users of around the age of 35 to 54 years are increasing in number rapidly and he gives Although this article lacks some reasons why Orenstein finds that a large number of people are becoming addicted by internet and she is not a specialist in psychology or addiction disorders, I still find her work useful in helping me in my start of the research since for the background of my research since she uses her nieces as examples meaning it is something she has experienced among the people she always interact with.

Derbyshire, David. Social Networking Sites Harm Children's Brains. Are Social Networking Sites Harmful? (2011):357-369. doi: GALE|EJ3010744204.Accessed 13th February 2019

David Derbyshire informs readers in this article of how internet use and the social net working sites like chat rooms can have a negative impact on children explaining the effects. Derbyshire states that overusing of these social networking sites can change the way a person thinks and "rewire "the brain of the user. He discusses more on how it can infantilize the users and how exposure to instant messaging in various chat rooms, gaming and other online activities can cause decreased attention spans. David Derbyshire sources are credible because despite been a journalist; his sources come from psychologists and neuroscientist. Jane Healy the psychologist and Baroness Greenfield the neuroscientist provides an input from an interview. This work is useful in my research since it explains the effects of repeated technology use in adolescents who are usually college students and the ideas are true for the internet addiction among college students topic.

In this article, Kandell Jonathan explains how college students are vulnerable to internet addiction and why this particular group is the most vulnerable to internet addiction. In this text, he goes into discussion what is internet addiction, the relationship between internet addiction and college students and the various treatment measures which can be put in place to treat internet addiction and he explains that the same measures used the in the treatment of gambling addiction can be used to treat internet addiction. Jonathan has produced many articles and books about cyber psychology and behavior thus making him a credible source to consider while doing me research.

I find Kandell Jonathan work very relevant and useful since he specializes in cyber psychology and behavior meaning he is conversant with internet addiction among the college students who are vulnerable.

Hawi's article discusses about the large number of youths in Lebanon that are addicted to the internet. The author of the article requested around 833 web survey students to identify the reason as to why many adolescents in Lebanese private and public schools are highly addicted to the internet. The research indicated that around 34.9% have constant problems with 4.2% having an internet addiction problem meaning that about 39% of the students are suffering from internet addiction. I find this research accurate since it shows how most teenagers use the internet for entertainment purposes rather than using it for academic purposes. It is very helpful for my research since it provides statistics of students addicted to internet usage and shows the variation of internet addiction among different countries like Changsha, China and Lebanon.

Conclusion

The above discussed sources contain detailed discussions from different authors and are similar in that the main topic which is about internet addiction and especially among teenagers or adolescents who from the largest part among students in colleges and campuses. The summary given by Cash and his fellow authors about internet addiction discusses more about the symptoms, effects, diagnostic measures and treatment measure about internet enabling me to get a background information for my topic. Sarao, Poonam and Jonathan explains the vulnerability of college students to internet addiction giving explanations as to why college students are most vulnerable with Jonathan stating some treatment measures to help cure the internet addiction disorder, their article will help me in my research project because they give a clear explanation about the topic and the three authors have knowledge on internet addiction issue to mean their articles are very relevant.

Orenstein uses her nieces as an example in her article of "Growing up in Facebook" making it simple to get a clear picture about the internet addiction issues for a better research project, she defines and explains the topic very well for quick understanding. Derbyshire discusses how internet addiction causes harm to teenagers, this information is relevant to my research because it discusses the target audience more. Lastly, Hawi's article contributes to my research in that it gives statistical information and variation of different addiction among college students. All the articles discussed above are relevant to the subject of discussion since they provide a detailed explanation on the topic about internet addiction among college campus students with relevant opinions.
