Oliver, who is the director of the Downfall film, shows the human side of Hitler in the last ten days of his life. The film became controversial when the director made the audience to sympathize with Hitler something that was not acceptable (Hirschbiegel, 2004). The director takes a lot of time in this film in painting Hitler as a wicked man. Throughout the film, the audience was in dilemma of whether to hate or pity Hitler, but at the end of it all they ended up doing both. Hitler was so wicked to the extent that he was not ready to let the citizens even when the Russians were invading Berlin. When his captains tell him, how his soldiers are being killed every day, he says that young people are for dying in other words what he meant is that there is no problem, in the soldiers being killed. The film paints Hitler as an awful man, however, at the beginning of the film, he is shown a man who is very kind. At the beginning of the film, we meet with Hitler in this film when he is interviewing women to find a secretary. In the process of Hitler interviewing the women he is shown as a man who his friendly with women, and who takes some time to know each woman a little bit more, when he interviews a woman who was in her early twenties, and she failed, but because the woman was beautiful, Hitler ends up hiring the lady. Hitler was kind to women and loved his dog more than anything. When the film begins, the audience is confused if that is the same Hitler who is written in the books of History.
However, after some few scenes, we can see a different version of Hitler. His wickedness is depicted when he realizes that Berlin and her inhabitants was in danger as it was going to be invaded by the Russians but decided to stop people from moving out of the place. He is very proud and often says that he will not surrender no matter what. Hitler is hypocritical. This is seen when he says that he does everything because of the love he has for the people of Germany and yet he is not ready to let the people get out of Berlin even when he is told by his Captains that, Russian soldiers were going to invade the place. It is ironical that Hitler claims to Love the people of Germany and yet he was not ready to protect them from their enemies instead he was ready to sacrifice theme just because of his pride. He is later quoted saying that, they cannot worry with the civilians, meaning he did not care as he claimed to.
However, Hitler is shown to be human when he marries Eva Braun in the bunker. Whether Hitler is scared of commitment or he is in love, what is clear to the audience is that the Love of Eva to Hitler was sincere. The three women who were beside around Hitler did not leave, even when they knew that Russia was going to invade Berlin and they were not going to be spared.
Conclusion
Towards the end of the film, the director paints Hitler as a coward. Hitler panics when he realizes that all his officers were fleeing for their safety. Since a lot of officers had a runway for their safety, Hitler appointed a young general to the position of a senior commander who was to be in charge of safety, his Cowardice is not hidden in this film, what is more, astonishing is his conflicting personalities (Chaume, F. (2018). On the other hand, this film shows the audience that, even the evilest people in society like Hitler are human. In this film, the director shows Hitler as a man who has both emotions as well as compassion at the beginning of the movie just like any other man, however, this is contrary to what many have learned in the books of History about Hitler. This is shown by the audience that is angered and does not want to interact or get associated with a man who is evil, and this is the main role of this, it allows the audience to make a very special connection with the audience, something that they thought they would never do. At the beginning of this film, we meet Hitler, an ordinary man who is looking for a secretary. In doing this we see him going through a standard interview process to feel the position, we even see him giving the lady who ends up being his secretary, a second chance after faulting in typing. The contrast of this human side of Adolf Hitler that is depicted in the Film The Downfall is the normal Hitler that people know from the books of history. Hitler is shown sacrificing both the civilians as well as the troops to maintain his pride. In the beginning, he says that he is fighting to protect the people of Germany, but later he is ready to sacrifice them to show his enemies that he will never surrender no matter what happens.
