Introduction

When I consider the idea that I am a “sinner, condemned, and unclean,” I think about Romans 3:23 (ESV), “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” I have fallen short more times than I can count. I fully acknowledge and accept that I am a sinner, condemned, and unclean. However, that is why the sacrifice of what Jesus did on the cross means everything to me. Knowing Jesus bore our pain and suffering so that we would not have to face the ultimate consequence of death is unfathomable. Romans 6:23 (ESV) goes on to add, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” I fully deserve death without eternity, but the gift of eternal life has nothing to do with anything that I could ever have done. I have accepted salvation because Jesus loved me enough not to leave me in my sin. Each day that I live for Him, I am reminded to surrender my fleshly desires and wants.

There is only so much that we, as humans, can do to aid in lasting change. When sin entered the world, humankind was never going to be the same. It was not until Jesus entered the picture, died on the cross, and ascended into heaven that we truly had hope again. With that said, nothing will ever be perfect apart from God. As Christians, we have a unique opportunity in our service to others to shine a light that others will see. However, we will have our shortcomings and moments that we are unable to think or act entirely without sin. We can continue to work on ourselves by being prayerful, in the word, and relationship with other believers. Ultimately, we cannot be perfected here on this earth.

Acknowledging the reality of sin in my own life helps keep me grounded. It also allows me to see shortcomings in others’ lives and extend patience and grace. Being aware of these factors will assist in my future work as a social work professional. I must realize that I can never expect a future client to be perfect and without shortcomings. Just as I acknowledge imperfections in my own life, I must be willing to walk through this journey of life with others who have their imperfections. The idea that we are all flawed human-beings is not an excuse to sit back and continue living in our sin, but rather to acknowledge that we need help in changing the areas of our lives where we struggle. Only God can provide a lasting, authentic change in our lives.

Discussion

As human beings, we are always subjected to temptation, and at some point, sin is inevitable. It is essential to understand that everyone has a self-established perception on the best ways of living life. Such reflected on their decision on how to treat and behave towards others. When allocated any role in society, we are bound to interact with individuals of varying personalities. We might not always be treated as we desire or expect. Not all persons adhere to religious teachings and values. It is then my personal responsibility to determine how I treat others regardless of how they do to me.

With any functional responsibilities in society, I have to assure that everyone is satisfied after interacting with me. Salvation is not about living a morally upright but judgemental lifestyle. It is hard to understand the reasons for a different person reacting hardly towards you. As such, there should be consideration of the always existing good in everyone, but they decided to suppress it. A person should always do good with the promise that one day it may positively impact someone’s life.
