Introduction
The first art is called A Man in a Blue Smock. It was painted around the year 1896 to 1897 by a French artist, Paul Cezanne. The artist is known to have used his son and wife as models in his work. Cezanne did 1084 arts, where A Man in a Blue Smock is among his works. He participated in the 19th century artwork transition, which extended in to the 20th century. In most of his works, he was assisted by his relatives. He was a renowned artist during the period, and has remained a legend up to date. Relating his artwork to daily life experiences attribute to the success of most of his works. His artwork comprised mostly of nude studies, landscapes, portraits, and still life categories. A Man in a Blue Smock can d be placed under the still life category. The art was first purchased in 1906 by Ambroise Vollard. Later, the art was bought by a series of other people, and is currently owned by the3 Kimbell Art Museum foundation. The art is located in the current owner's museum in Fort Worth, Texas.
The art's original physical dimensions are 81.5 x 64.8 cm ((1,669 2,099 pixels). it is a portrait of a sited man in a blue court and a red tie. The man is looking forward and seems to be either in deep thoughts, tired, or sad. In the background, there is a woman carrying an umbrella, which can represent a very sunny or rainy day. However, it can be assumed that the day was rainy, since blue is a water colour, while there is also a woman holding an umbrella. Probably, the man was sited below a shade in a walking street. When one looks at the art, they can feel a sense of empathy or pity, due to the man's facial expression. While painting the art, Cezanne used implied lines, with an invisible contour line. One has to guess the size of the man, based on the shading of the image. Only few lines are seen on the hands of the man, the arms of the lady on the background, and the umbrella. The lines used are faint, with no linear lines visible. The space in the art is behind the man. Space has been painted in a faint blue colour, thus the lady in the background cannot be seen vividly. Only few colours are used in the paint. Shades of blue are the dominant colours used. There are other few colours representing minor things, such as the red tie. Lighting of the image comes from within the art. The light is not intense, and do not seem to direct the viewer in any way.
Dr Paul GachetThe second art is called Dr Paul Gachet, which was painted by Vincent van Gogh, a Postimpressionism artist. He was born in the year 1853, and painted around 2100 artworks. His artwork comprised mostly of nude studies, landscapes, portraits, and self-portrait images. He is one of the most renown artists in the Western art culture, and considered a misunderstood art genius up to date. Van Gogh was born by a pastor and raised in areligious family. He started drawing at a young age, and was often thoughtful, quiet and serious. As a young man, he worked as an art dealer, then fell into depression after moving to London. He had an unsuccessful life, and only became famous after committing suicide. He suffered from mental illness and often neglected his physical health. Dr Paul Gachet painted in 1890 and first sold in the year 1897, and has had a series of owners since then. The last known owner was Saito, a Japanese business man, who died in 1996.
The arts original physical dimension is 680 x 570 cm. it is a portrait of a man sited while holding flowers on one hand, and holding his chin with the other. The man is looking down and seems to be sad, probably heart broken by a lover since flowers are a representation of love. The art displays a sense of pity or empathy for the sad man. Lines are used to demonstrate the form of the man. The man occupies most of the space in the image, and there is a blue background. The art has few colours, where shades of blue dominate. The light comes from within the art and does not direct the viewer in any way.
Comparing the Arts
The two paintings have several similarities. First, they were created in the 1890s. both images have lighting coming from within the art, which does not direct the viewer in any way. Also, the artists used few colours, to represent a simple and perfect painting. Different shades of blue are the most dominant colours utilized. Lines used are few and do not express any emotions or direct the viewer. Also, lines are used to show form in both paintings. When one looks at both paintings, they can feel a sense of pity or empathy for the men painted. On the other hand, there are several differences on the two arts. On A Man in a Blue Smock, the space is behind the man and painted in blue, while on Dr Paul Gachet, the man occupies the space, with a blue background. One image is of a man outside, shading himself from the rain, and the second paint, the man seems to be indoors. In A Man in a Blue Smock, one would have to guess the size of the man based on the colour shading, while in Dr Paul Gachet, lines are used to show form.
