WHAT WAS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND?

The realization that Vito is gay shocked a lot of people – since no one ever thought of him being gay. Vito’s boss, friends, and Wife could not believe how he ended up becoming gay – all of them were in denial of the truth that had unfolded. It was challenging to understand Vito’s situation since people like Tony grew up in a catholic background – which strongly denounced in the form of gay practice.

IN THE EPISODE, WHICH AGENTS OF SOCIALIZATION COULD YOU IDENTIFY? HOW DID YOU KNOW THEY WERE AGENTS OF SOCIALIZATION?

In the two-episode of The Sopranos, the primary agents of socialization are family, peer groups, and religion. It emerged as a socializing agent since these factors contributed to social education, shaping adults’ ethical behavior. At the family level, it appeared that Tony’s upbringing had a significant negative view on his son’s behavior. Moreover, Tony’s son is at home when he teaches him about responsibility – by telling his son that if he does not take the construction work, he will throw him out of the house. The peer groups also shape the social education since Tony’s friends denounced any thought of homosexuality because they considered it unethical (Edmonds). The same belief is even propagated by religion because Tony mentions to her psychiatrist that his religion does not condone gay people.

WHAT DO YOU THINK TONY’S CREW WERE SOCIALIZED TO BELIEVE ABOUT HOMOSEXUALS AND HOMOSEXUALITY? HOW WERE THESE NORMS/IDEAS INTERNALIZED, EXTERNALIZED?

Tony’s crew believed homosexuality is the worst form of evil not accepted in any society. They internalized these norms by resisting any thought concerning homosexuality. The belief got externalized when the crew showed aggressive behavior to find Vito to kill him.

WHAT NORMS/ IDEAS SEEMED TO BE OBJECTIVATED? WHICH SEEMED TO BE DESTABILIZED? WHEN? HOW DO YOU KNOW THE NORMS WERE DESTABILIZED? EXPLAIN

The norms that seem objectivated is family and religion. However, homosexuality is considered a destabilizing issue. When news got out that Vito is gay, everybody became angry with him, and some of his crew members wanted to kill him (Edmonds).

HOW DID SOME OF THE GANGSTERS RESPOND TO FINDING OUT THAT VITO WAS GAY? WHY DO YOU THINK THEY RESPONDED THAT WAY?

The majority of the gangsters in the group became angry and shocked. The gangster crew responded this way because they grew up believing homosexuality is terrible. Similarly, they felt betrayed by Vito since he hid the fact that he was gay from them all that time.

HOW DID TONY RESPOND? WHY DO YOU THINK HE RESPONDED THE WAY HE DID?

Tony also became shocked, but he wanted to hear it from Vito himself – since he kept on calling him. The way he talked to the psychiatrist about the whole issue showed the bitter feelings he had in his heart.

HOW DID OTHER FORCES (SPEC) PLAY A ROLE IN TONY’S DECISION MAKING? LIST EXAMPLES FOR EACH

However, Tony decided to forgive Vito, and he could have given Vito back his job if he was to come back. The main forces that influence his decision include his experience, cognitive biases, and outcomes. The experience that softens his decision is when he saw a vision while in a coma in a hospital bed (Edmonds). Additionally, Tony considers the outcome of killing Tony by telling his crew he has a family – who will get affected by their decision. Lastly, Tony gets driven by cognitive biases since he mentions to his friends that they can’t pretend they do not know people who are gay.

EXPLAIN, USING THE CONCEPTS YOU HAVE LEARNED THUS FAR, WHAT HAPPENS TO VITO AND WHY? FOCUS ON IMAGINING SOCIOLOGICALLY. THAT IS, TRY AND EXPLAIN VITO’S FATE IN TERMS OF SOCIAL, POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL FORCES

Vito got killed because he is gay – and homosexuality is a destabilizing factor in society. Socially, homosexuality is one of the unethical issues which agitates people. Furthermore, his friend wanted to kill him because being gay is embarrassing, and no one wanted to become associated with him. The gangsters feared that allowing him to continue with the crew could make their rivals mock them – ultimately leading to the loss of their customers.
