Introduction
Lena Dunham is many things. She manages to capture the attention and criticism of many people through her essays. In the book, she manages to advocate for the rights of women, elections, adoption of animals and also talks about embracing one's body. She is, therefore, the kind of girl that one would either love or hate. She manages to do more than just talking about the causes she cares about. It is her passions that drive her actions. She records her experiences in her memoir-Not That Kind of Girl. She tends to overshare her experiences, and this makes her fans to love her more and her critics to throw harsh criticism towards her. Ease of communication is a characteristic of the globalization in the modern society. It is essential to be seen or heard through speaking out to get your message to your targeted audience. It doesn't matter whether it is on social media, mainstream media or even on a paper. In as much as various controversies are surrounding her actions, Lena Dunham is the voice of reason and stands up by speaking out for what she truly believes in.
Lena Dunham manages to tell the world how she feels. She points out the fact that there is a need for women to develop and hold on to their opinions. They should support their perception by taking a stand on some issues that take place in their immediate environment since they also have a voice, and this voice deserves to be heard. The objective of speaking out is to make one's voice be heard to make positive changes to the society. It is challenging to picture a world where people fail to speak their minds like Lena Dunham. For instance, Lena Dunham tells her parents to avoid freaking out since she might be the voice of her generation.
Male Chauvinism dominates the modern society. There are still unresolved issues of gender disparity and female dominion. It means that conflict still exists in gender balance. One would, therefore, find it hard to advocate for the rights and the position of women in the society. Because of such a conflict, these matters have taken a political standpoint, socio-economic status and also need for acceptance among other various platforms which include literature and art world. The society sets some limits and expects the female gender to abide by these limits. Lena Dunham manages to bridge this gap characterized by ethical conducts and moral values by integrating her knowledge to paint the evolution of feminism in the modern society.
Some individuals sometimes fail to speak up and make their voices be heard. When people discuss some matters that affect their society, the more, prominent and public such issues become because they receive much attention. Some of these issues that managed to gain public attention are #MeToo movement which emerged as a result of sexual abuse in the media industry when Harvey Weinstein was accused of abusing women on several occasions (Manikonda, Beigi, Liu & Kambhampati, 2018).. Many women started speaking out. Those who were scared to talk about such issues took advantage of the campaign, and they boldly talked about their experiences through the #MeToo hashtag. The campaign was a successful example of what it means to speak out for a cause and a movement. Since the launching of the advocacy, various actors became victims of sexual abuse and sexual harassment accusation. The campaign managed to boldly stand up and speak out against sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and sexual assault. There is a need to come up with ways of stopping such issues that affect the female gender in the society so that such problems do not repeat themselves.
One needs a backup of facts and knowledge to speak out effectively. Knowledge and facts help people to defend themselves in situations where they face criticism, opposition, and prejudice. Facts and knowledge helps one to back up one's claim on what one says and how he/she said it. The character that Roxanne uses is a perfect way of bridging the enlightening gap women that they have a voice. It also tells them that they must ensure that their voice is heard for the message to be read clearly, to achieve its intended objective. Dunham writes, "There is nothing gutsier in me than a person announcing that their story is one that deserves to be told, especially if that person is a woman." (Dunham, 2014). The voice of the author is, therefore, a voice that does not only deserve to be heard but also the voice that inspires other significant voices to motivate them to tell their stories. Telling their stories would make them be listened to. Lena Dunham, therefore, is that kind of woman that many women would aspire to be due to her refreshing take on being a woman. She is ready and willing to show people her heart.
Conclusion
In conclusion, people need to speak up more on issues that affect their lives. People need to make use of their voices and talk about issues of social injustices, discrimination based on ethnicity and racism, sexuality, democracy, gender roles, equality among other various issues that Lenah manages to highlight boldly. Such social injustices need to end. However, there are fears that such issues might not end shortly. People need to stand up and speak for the current generation.
