The population across the world is rising every day in different countries, states, and locations. The population growth in the world signifies a sign of change in social diversity. In the United States of America, different states have recorded a significant change and rise in population. Most of the fifty states of America have marked an increase in population and demographic change. The Census Bureau of the United States projects a population growth with thirty-eight percent (38%) by the year 2060.
Honolulu is a city in the United States located in Oahu Southern coast and the south of the Pacific Ocean. Honolulu city is among the largest island of Hawaii, covers eighty-six square miles and an approximated area of one hundred and seventy-seven kilometers squared 177km2 (Dixon). Geographically, Honolulu city climbs an extinct volcano punchbowl and is between the Koolau mountain range and the ocean.
The geography of Honolulu city is marked by the geographical features in the city of Honolulu, for example, Honolulu downtown is a government center, commercial and financial center of Hawaii (Briney). Aloha Towers is a building landmark with a height of four hundred and thirty-eight meters. According to Briney, Honolulu is further endowed to host the Ala Moana the largest open-air shopping center in Hawaii (Briney). The city climatic condition is semi-tropical making Honolulu the warmest town in Hawai between may and October. However, there is a mild temperature from September to November. The temperatures in Honolulu vary across the year between twenty-seven to thirty-two degrees Celsius.
The geospatial location of Honolulu encompasses Waikiki a tourist district, Waialae exclusive residential with high price homestays, Kalihi a region with government developed houses for the working class, Salt Lake, and Moanalua neighborhood and valley at the western side (Briney). The geographic counties of Honolulu include the Kauai County to northwest and Maui County to the southeast. Moreover, the city of Honolulu contains protected areas include James Campbell national wildlife refuge, Oahu forest national wildlife refuge and USS Arizona Memorial that attract tourists.
The population size of Honolulu is 351, 800 a number that makes the city the most populous city in Hawaii. The demographics in Honolulu range from different world communities that include 54% of Asian, white comprise 18%, Africa American community 0.2%, native Pacific Islander 8.4%, Hispanic 5.4%, and other communities 17% (Briney). However, the population demographics change has changed with time. The Honolulu white community comprised 34% in 1970 and Pacific Islander and Asian had 54% of the total population in the city.
Today, the Asian American community makes the majority in Honolulu. However, the leading ethnic groups include the Japanese with 20%, Filipinos with 13%, Chinese with 10%, Korean 4%, and the native Hawaii ancestral natives compose of 3.2%. Honolulu makes Hawaii the only state with the majority Asian community in the United States. The city community change further contributes to population growth where the population has risen with 8.8%, and it is expected to grow to 9% by the year 2030. However, the cost of living such as rental houses cost has made the city population to not to increase for the last two years but expected to continue growing with time. The sector model has allowed the Honolulu population growth and facilitates proper land use.
The population change has resulted in resources constrain in Honolulu. The growth results in high cost of living such as housing. However, the future of Honolulu is expected to be expensive unless the concentric model that will control social structure of Hawaii as a state to ensure people proper use the urban centers and adequate resource use in Honolulu. Honolulu does not have an active urban renewal plan, but plans are underway for architectural drawings for the rising population (Chapman). Nevertheless, the sector and concentric models effect on the population will be controlled by the high cost of living and taxes that will eventually deter population growth from foreigners.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the population growth in Honolulu has yielded some adverse outcome on the social, environmental and on the economy. The environment has been affected through infrastructure development while there is economic pressure from the high cost of living. However, the expected results were achieved because there is the great hope for the future because there are mitigation measures to control the effect of population growth such as government development projects for all social groups and sustainable environmental conservation for the future generation.
