Gender is a basis that determines the sociocultural characteristics and traits that are taken to be appropriate for males or females; it defines the different contributions that men and women make to cultural aspects and life in general depending on whom they are either men or women. In other words, it relates to the roles imposed and internalized to males or females via different modes of socialization. Contrastingly, sex is the physiological endowment that makes one a man or a woman; it is the biological state of being male or female. Based on gender, norms have it, that men should be superior and dominant to women and that women should be submissive to the men (Midwest New Media, 2016). Men are seen to take responsibility on anything that entails provision to the family while women are expected to deal with the responsibilities of raising the kids and dealing with basic home issues such as cooking and providing conjugal services to men. Men should go to work while women should remain at home. All these are misinterpreted roles in the ideal cultural society.
Both sexes and gender have a significant impact on the work equation between a delivery service provider and a service delivery recipient. The fact is that, whether men or women, any service can be well delivered as long as the right training is provided to the individual. Sadly, discriminations including pregnancy discrimination or even to the extremes, sexual harassment occur in the process of service delivery. A service provider may require sexual favors from a recipient for him/her to deliver the service efficiently and effectively. This certainly causes a significant distortion of the work equation between the deliverer and the recipient of the service.
Based on their gender and/or sex, different staff members have different opportunities in a given work scenario (Midwest New Media, 2016). An example being regarding pay, a top female salesperson may be moved to a less desirable territory while a male salesperson with poor sales takes over the territory this means that he ends up making more commission than the female will be making in a long while.
In terms of benefits, most men are favored than women. Consider a case where a company offers health insurance cover for the male employees and their spouse, but fails to cover the spouse to a female employee since the company concludes that the husband to the so employed female receives his benefits (Wilson, 1988). Also, a company may hire, terminate or promote an individual on the basis purely of their sex or gender. For instance, a company may opt to hire a male messenger or mail delivery personnel as opposed to a female one in line with this is that a company may choose to hire only female receptionists and secretaries as opposed to males. Thus, there is a resulting negative impact resulting from sex and gender in the agency of staff members. There is an evident disparity as illustrated by the examples outlined.
Conclusively, there are big discrepancies in the society based on gender and sex. However, things are changing for the better as gender mainstreaming is being propagated in the civilized society. Sensitization is being carried out by organizations such as the USAID to ensure that matters related to gender and sexual discriminations have been overcome.
