Abstract
The lean production process is essential for it raises the levels of effectiveness in the production process. The procedure is applied in the construction industry and it helps to lower the costs of running the building process and reduces the wastage of resources. Planners should work towards finding means that they can always use and realize effectiveness when they are undertaking their activities. The procedures that they use should enable them to realize the desired outcome and ensure that there is efficiency. In the United Kingdom, the lean process is utilized massively and it has been discovered that positive results are realized with the builders managing to get the right outcome that they want.
Literature Review:
The Toyota Production Company is one of the entities in the world that is relying on the lean production method to facilitate its production process. The firm relies on two fundamental concepts, which are the Just in Time flow (JIT) and Autonomation (smart automation) as shown in the figure below. The word “lean” is utilized to refer to the procedure that is relied on when minimizing the amount of wastage from a production process and ensure that there is a rise in the production process. The Total quality management (TQM) procedure helps a business to improve on the quality of their activities and production process by ensuring that there is continuous improvement. The Toyota firm relies on the TQM process to arrange the goals and objectives that it aims to realize in the short and long-term. The firm seeks to have incentives that will keep the workers motivated and ensure that they are offering value to the business.

The firm seeks to have a system that will ensure that there is a continuous production system that will provide quality products that are meeting the consumers’ needs. The process of analyzing data in the right way will facilitate the making of the right decisions leading to the realization of the desired outcome. Additionally, the company seeks to deliver the commodities required by clients in the right quality and quantity requested. Therefore, by relying on the lean production method, it will be possible to separate the craft production types and the mass ones based on the procedure and targets. The practice will also advance the execution of the utilized production system against a measure that determined the level of flawlessness to ensure that high-quality commodities are obtained.
At the beginning of the 1990s, a new strategy for production was introduced into the market and world-class manufacturing, and it was mainly applied by organizations in Europe and America. The lean production system was diversified to other sectors, and it has contributed to the alteration of the administration, product improvements, and organizational processes. The adjustments made led to the production process taking form in three different processes, which are the value generation theory, flow, and transformation. Managing the contribution process under the lean production method cannot be categorized at the same level as the regular contemporary practice. It is critical to note that the elements that raise these differences are that the lean production process enables the facilitating of the delivery process, and this is by ensuring that it has set goals.
The procedure is instituted to expand the execution process when undertaking a project, and it helps in the simultaneous planning of procedures and products. The system tends to apply the production control in the period that the project is being undertaken. The primary goals that the lean production process seeks to realize are to ensure that there is an active process of managing activities in a business and ensure that it is leading the various institutions that are discovered in the assembly and supply chains. It seeks to ensure that the planning process is undertaken in the right way, and this will involve determining the progress realized and the way to accomplish them and undertaking controls. The events should fit the plans made with the main aim of lowering the levels of wastages that are realized in the construction process. The Last Planner System (LPS) is a strategy that makes use of the lean production systems, and it has already demonstrated that it helps to improve the construction management systems, introduces different preferences, and lowering construction costs.
The construction industry is highly influenced by two main elements, which are the technology and management system. The effectiveness of the sector has remained low, and this is despite the application of the latest trends in the industry (Goldin, 2007). It is an indication that the advancement in technology is not adequate to ensure that the sector is fully equipped and running to its potential. Additional measures should be undertaken to ensure that the right measures are undertaken, expenses are lowered, and the resources are utilized optimally. For example, the industry has received the Computer-Aided Design (CAD) innovation that is enabling designers and engineers to have clear and better drawings, it cannot manage to eliminate the structural mistakes, and this is making it difficult for managers to effectively lower the operational costs (Heng Li, 1998) (Peter E. D. Love, 2000). The issue is significantly affecting the operations of designers since they are finding it challenging to raise the quality of their work when they are reducing the operational costs.
The builders may decide to rely on the latest innovation tools and contemporary administration procedures. They should incorporate the lean production procedures that ensure that the clients’ needs are incorporated in the construction process while lowering the resources that are utilized in the process (GREEN, 1999). Therefore, the industry will manage to raise the quality of commodities it is offering its clients and, at the same time, manage to reduce the operational costs (Koskela, Lean production in construction, Pages 1-9, 1997), (Ballard, 1998). In the United Kingdom, the lean production system is applied in the construction industry, and positive results have been realized, and this is encouraging the rest of the world to rely on a similar procedure to get their desired output. According to Miller et al. (CHRISTOPHER J. M. MILLER, 2002), there is a need to ensure that there is harmonization that is introduced between the principle temporary workers and subcontractors, and this is a procedure that will help in lean construction execution. Thomas et al. (H. Randolph Thomas, Horman, Souza, & Zavrski, 2002), (Thomas H. H., 2003), on the other hand, stated that the best strategy that can be adopted to ensure that there is efficiency in managing the fluctuations for this would help in raising the execution and improving the quality of labor flow. Therefore, it is clear that the procured of lean production that is adapted by Toyota Company is realizing the desired outcome, and there is a need to ensure that it is applied in various fields, such as the construction industry.
According to Gabriel (Gabriel, 1997), a supervisor in a construction process should work towards ensuring that all parties are working together towards the realizing of similar outcomes, for this is the goal that will ensure that the desired outcome is obtained. Therefore, it is clear that the lean process can be useful in managing the construction and art industry with massive success levels (Abdulsalam A. Al-Sudairi, 1999). The cost of running the projects is minimized while the time taken to complete the activity is also reduced. It shows that the overall quality of the project is top-notch, and the procedure should be utilized to realize massive success and growth (Thomas, 2003). Various personnel in the construction industry have adopted the lean production framework to minimize waste and raising incremental benefits. It is possible to utilize the PC simulation systems that are essential in recreating and making an evaluation of the viability and productivity of the development process that has been re-engineered, and this is through the use of the lean method (Salem, 2005). Other measures that have been utilized to encounter the use of the lean process include construction simulation and 3-D representation (Mao, 2008).
The construction sector has accepted that some of the challenges that they experience can be managed and controlled by relying on the lean production system. It should be incorporated in the other measures that are used in the same sector, and this helps to ensure that the right results are obtained (Song, 2011).
Regarding the construction problem discussed above, some of the objectives that this paper seeks to realize include passing the decisions on the lean process as being ideal and determine the source of wastes that are obtained when the lean system is used. Additionally, there will be an examination of the development business impression when lean standards are applied. There will be a study of the procedures that can be used in lowering the wastes by relying on the Last Planner System that helps in lean execution and determination of the easy that plan accuracy can be expanded. Another objective include the examination of the relationship that exists between execution improvement programs and the lean construction when undertaking development activities. When the presentation improvement plans become a success, it is essential to determine its qualities to makes sure that there is the construction of a model that will manage to distinguish three necessary components that are improvement objectives and point of view, progress time used, and improved components and aptitudes (Remon Fayek Aziz, 2013)
Research Question
The research question seeks to determine the lean thinking purpose and why it should be used in the construction industry. Additionally, there is also a determination of the techniques and principles that are relied on when undertaking the lean construction process.
Study Significance
The significance of this study seeks to determine the importance of using the lean production system in the construction. There is a need to decide how it will lower expenses in this sector and minimize wastages to ensure that the limited available resources are optimally utilized. The entities that will benefit from this study are the personnel that are involved in this industry. The constructors and planners will easily manage their operations, while at the same time helping the owners to minimize the costs of running their activities. The general economy will also benefit when there is the optimal utilization of the resources available. The project’s goal is to ensure that the lean production system is adopted and incorporated in a system already in existence to raise efficiency and operation levels.
