Introduction
International trade involves the exchange of goods between different countries in the world. The foreign market in the United States affects international exports and imports between the United States and other most significant nations in the world. The United States became a notable global trade policymakers after the Great Depression. Right now the US has become a partner to several agreements of international trade like WTO and GATT (Heakal, 2018). Global trade has allowed most wealthy countries to utilize their resources efficiently. The trade deficits for the United States have been increased by; macroeconomic policies, mercantilist of foreign governments and the distortions and interventions in the individual product markets (Heakal, 2018). Therefore, the paper will discuss the effects of international trade on domestic policymaking in the United States and the current policy decisions in the US. It will also discuss the influence of the United States state-level decisions on other nations.
Foreign policy will involve the interaction of a nation individually with other states. Foreign policy study has become very important and crucial. Decisions that are made by just one state in the 21st century may affect so many countries more than the participating ones (Hussain, 2010). Most people have the urge to know the foreign policy decisions the primary motivator for the government in foreign policy decision making.
State-level foreign policy decisions in the United States are influenced by global factors as well as domestic politics. The head of government in the United States will play a significant role in foreign policy decision making. International interest group will also influence the decision making in foreign policies like the world trade organization has the power has that power to tell a state to change their foreign policy decisions. The WTO made interventions that were significant in the EU and US banana wars (Hussain, 2010). That brings no doubt that the international organizations have influenced global society, but a nation-state can ignore some of the decisions that those international organizations make so that they can achieve their domestic agendas. Thus, the head of governments like in the US take foreign policy decisions considering international and domestic decisions.
The United States as a hegemon may make some state-level decisions that end up affecting other nations. In the policy of trading tariffs where the government decides to restrict importation of goods and services which may affect other nations that produced the goods and services to subsidize their products (Hussain, 2010). The US coordinate macroeconomic policies with Japan and Europe thus encouraging those countries to reflate and stimulate their economies making the export demand to go high. Also, promotion of international labor rights and environmental standards, through aggressive agreements that are enforceable with trade sanctions, in thus giving consumers in these countries the resources to buy more products from the U.S (Hussain, 2010).
Conclusion
From research, it shows that the United States foreign policy objective is to use diplomacy or making some agreements that will then solve international problems (Goldberg & Pavcnik, 2016). In the US, the state department officials take an essential part in making foreign policy and the secretary of the state that is the president's adviser in foreign policy who coordinates all governmental actions which affect other nations (Goldberg & Pavcnik, 2016). Therefore I support the foreign policy in the US as they help maintain a balance of power among the different countries, help in preserving national security in the united states and also promotes peace globally by solving an international problem. My recommendation to the US is that the government officials should consult with other countries to avoid making policies that will make other nations suffer.
