Introduction

Futurism is a modernist movement which began in Italy in early 20th century. Futurism was founded by Umberto Boccioni and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, a poet and painter. It sought to embrace modernity and the energy of modern life and reject traditional artistic values. Futurism celebrated speed, industry and technology through poetry, sculpture, painting, poetry, manifestos and other media.

Futurism's Founding Fathers

Filippo Tommaso Marinaetti and Umberto Boccioni were the key figures behind the Futurism movement's founding. Boccioni, an Italian painter was the first person to use the term Futurism in 1910 when he published the Manifesto of Futurist Painters. Marinetti, an Italian poet published the Futurist Manifesto, which outlined the principles and goals of the Futurism movement in 1909. They were close friends and collaborated on many projects.

Futurism's Principles and Goals

Five main ideas were outlined in the Futurist Manifesto: a rejection and celebration of the past; a celebration and celebration of energy and dynamism; a celebration and celebration of modern life; a rejection and desire to create a new type of art. Futurism is a violent protest against passive acceptance. The manifesto stated that Futurists would "glorify War - the only cure for this world - [and] militarism and patriotism. This destructive gesture of freedom-bringers. Beautiful ideas worth dying for. And scorn for women."

Futurism and the Impact on Art and Culture

Futurism had a significant impact on culture and art in Italy and eventually spread to other parts of the world. The Futurist Manifesto was well-read and its ideas and artwork had a significant impact on the development of modern art. Boccioni's painting, "The City Rises", (1910) was a significant contribution to Futurism. It captured modern life's energy and dynamism. Futurists were also open to technology and were responsible for inventing a variety of new art forms such as aeropainting which was the first form aerial photography.

Futurism and Politics: The Impact

Futurism had an important impact on the politics of Italy. Marinetti and Boccioni, both strong supporters of Italian nationalism, sought to use Futurism as a means to promote Italy's image abroad. It had a significant influence on the Fascist party which was established in 1919. Futurists tried to use the principles of the movement to promote Fascist causes, and Benito Mussolini was a strong supporter.

Futurism Today: The Relevance

Futurism was founded over 100 years ago. However, it's still a significant influence today. Contemporary artists have embraced the Futurist ideas of energy, dynamism, and their embrace of technology. The Futurist ideas about modernism, progress, and celebrations of speed and industry are still relevant today.

Conclusion

Futurism was an important modernist movement that emerged from Italy in the first half of the 20th century. The movement was led by Umberto Boccioni and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, a poet and painter. It sought to abandon traditional art forms and embrace modernity and energy. Futurism had a significant impact on culture and art in Italy, as well as politics, especially the Fascist party. Even though the movement was founded over 100 years ago, it is still influencing contemporary art today.
