Present state of the quality and safety movement at the national level
Although quality has been difficult to achieve in the health care sector, there are several improvements which have been done at the national level to ensure that the Americans get quality care. Quality and safety movement at the national level has improved the diagnostic safety (Cantiello, Kitsantas, Moncada, & Abdul, 2016). The reason is that diagnostic error is an essential and under-recognized danger to the patient safety. The safety of the patients matters a lot at the national level, and it is upon the government to ensure that everyone receives quality healthcare services. Therefore, at the national level, the government has highly invested in research to help in the better understanding of the way the errors usually occur and the activities that can be performed in preventing them.
The current quality and safety movement at the national level mainly emphasizes values which include which entails being transparent with the patients and their families concerning the anticipated outcomes. Most of the families are usually eager to know how their patients are performing and this has made some of the healthcare personnel to lie about patients who are not doing well. Also, the movement has advocated for a just and nonpunitive healthcare environment in which people are not punished when they report medical errors (American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, 2006). Therefore, through the movement, there have been an informed, data-driven, focus on system failures, learning from errors, accurate reporting, and flexible culture in recovering from the previous crises where doctors would not report the errors they have conducted. At the national, the movement has also made the healthcare organizations to have well-developed patient program safety in responding to internal and external pressures to improve.
Value is the main aim of every healthcare system (American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, 2006). Thus, currently, the quality and safety movement at the national level. The movement has used different methods to ensure that the government puts up improved infrastructure in healthcare centers. There has been a new improved healthcare infrastructure used by hospitals to provide quality care to the patients, but they are expensive which makes the national government chip in. Furthermore, several elements which are associated with healthcare improvement efforts including infrastructural support, physician leadership, and prioritization of quality in an organization's culture. Through the movement, the government has also been able to set up healthcare centers to ensure that patients can get health services close to them with the current facilities.
Another effort that has been taken by the movement is coordinating care efforts for the patients by introducing better data processes (Cantiello, Kitsantas, Moncada, & Abdul, 2016). Having quality data processes have improved the reputation of most healthcare centers since the trustworthiness of the patients have improved. Also, quality healthcare data influences every decision that is made with patient care continuum. Collection of data has enhanced the integrity and reliability of the medical practitioners in the current society since hospitals prepare accurate data which was introduced by the healthcare movement.
Recommended changes to the national quality and safety movement to improve effectiveness over the next five years
The national quality and safety movement should focus more on patient advocacy in the future since the patients are the main components in a high healthcare system. Thus, patient advocacy will play an essential role in propelling the patients in seating at the proverbial table. It is necessary for the national movement to involve the patients so that they can feel that the movement is working in ensuring that they get the best services. Moreover, without the patients knocking on the hospital's doors, demanding that they be part of the health conversations, there would be no real change or progress happening in the patient's centeredness. Involving the patients in every discussion of the national movement will also help in bringing more ideas in the best ways of improving services offered to the patients from different parts of the country.
In the future, the national quality and safety movement should focus more on outcome measurement and performance to achieve success since the ever-evolving healthcare environment is mainly aimed at rewarding quality and value (American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, 2006). There has been debate over healthcare law, and this has played an essential role in transforming the healthcare system of the United States. It means that for any adopted change in the next five years quality care delivery will be the central element considered. In future, quality will become quantifiable, routinely measured, standardized, and reported and it will also be linked to economic penalties and rewards. This issue makes it essential for the national movement to put more focus on outcome measurement and performance improvement.
The efforts of quality improvement in the future will merge several quality practices in improving healthcare industry processes (Lark, Kirkpatrick, & Chung, 2018). The movement should advocate for using the patient registries which can be easily linked to the PCMH framework, ERHs in enhancing the quality of care. Merging these tools will give the medical practitioners easy time when dealing with a high number of patients. It will also make the process of serving the patients fast, and this will make them not to wait for long hours as it used to happen in the past.
In developing a culture of quality and safety healthcare, the movement should make the medical practitioners understand the importance of working in teams (Lark, Kirkpatrick, & Chung, 2018). This issue might benefit the healthcare greatly instead of praising the clinicians exclusively for their skills and even encourage them to solve problems independently. At the national level, the movement should emphasize teamwork skills since it improves the clinician's outcomes and even prevents the occurrence of medical errors. Moreover, the use of skills from several industries and team building has turned out to be a significant tool in the healthcare facilities. The reason is that teamwork emphasizes the interdisciplinary method in offering care to the patients. Also, before the introduction of safety movement, medical errors responsibility was mainly regarded as to be for the clinician. However, this mindset is slowly changing, and people have realized that the system breakdowns should be blamed for medical errors.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the quality and safety movement at the national level has brought several changes in the health sector. The changes include ensuring that all the Americans get quality healthcare services, emphasized on values by being transparent in the different operations, enhancing improved infrastructure by the government, and coordinating care efforts for the patients by introducing better data processes. Some of the recommended changes in the national quality and safety movement in improving efficiency in the next five years include focusing on patient advocacy, focusing on outcome measurement, merging several quality practices, and making the medical practitioners understand the importance of working in teams.
