My presence at the Armenian Genocide protest last week was an eye-opening event that enabled me to understand the grievances of the Armenians. The protestors meet annually to take part in the walk as a remembrance of the many lives that were lost after the Turks massacred Armenians in large numbers. Protests occur when people feel that the government does not focus on their needs. Protests are a way of getting the attention of legislators who are the main lawmakers in the country. Elected officials in each state represent the needs of the citizens in the Senate. For instance, counties have selected a board of supervisors that hold the executive and legislative authority. The five members are unable to engage in national duties that would help resolve the issues facing the county. This leads to a disparity and discontentment among the locals. This has a high probability of triggering protests (Anagnoson et al. 2017, p.224). Democracy is exercised when voters are allowed to choose officials of their choice to represent them in public offices. Each person holds one vote which is their voice in the political environment (Anagnoson et al. 2017, p.76). Every candidate must be in a political party before they can present themselves as candidates for political and national duties. Commemoration of the Armenian killings is a clear indicator that it is important to preserve history. Direct democracy is an initiative that allows non-partisan commissions to oversee the reforms taking place in the country (Anagnoson et al. 2017, p32).

The political action reminded me lessons that I learned from the Anagnoson et al.'s book, Governing California, Armenians have had a similar history with the Jewish Holocaust, and the German government accepted the Armenian Genocide. The Germans helped the Turks commit the genocide on the Armenians and Turkey denies it, but Turkey's "best friend" Germany accepted its role in the massacre. The Senate and House of Representatives hold the power in the country as they formulate policies that guide the country. Anagnoson et al. 2017 (p.129) argue that the speaker, who is the leader of the Assembly has powers. Legislators choose the speaker for every political period. If a speaker serves well, he or she has a high probability of being re-elected in office again for another term. The government comprised of the executive branch and the judiciary, all which work together for the interests of citizens in a country. The courts help interpret the law by ensuring that the due process of law is respected. For instance, courts help resolve political disputes (Anagnoson et al. 2017, p175).

Conclusion

In the modern day, news about a particular issue circulates within a short-time after it takes place. The penetration and usage of social media have often been a disadvantage for a genuine piece of news that has been highlighted in a negative aspect. For instance, fake news about the history of Armenia and Turkey have often surfaced in the social media platforms. This has diverted the attention of readers from the real issues taking place in the country and the world at large (Anagnoson et al. 2017, p67). When the attention of the public is diverted into non-serious issues, the government fails to become responsible which increases the cases of public looting and irresponsibility. The presence of social media platforms has enabled citizens to source information about the activities taking place in the world.
