Introduction
Ethical conduct in law enforcement is very crucial, and thus, as a leader in the law enforcement agency, I understand that I have a significant responsibility in establishing the ethical orientation of the agency. I determine to ensure ethical practice in the police department so that the officers will behave ethically and respect the right of others. As a result, our agency will maintain its reputation as an institution with a strict code of ethics. The will be achieved by demonstrating ethical practices to all members of the agency.
Leadership Skills for Enforcing the Code of Ethics
To insure ethical practice in the police department, I would have to identify specific ethical standards that are in the best interest of the organization improvement. It will entail establishing an administrative decision that will encounter any all-encompassing law or regulation. I will also compose a law enforcement employees that would even reach out to the surrounding community and all other stakeholders. To accomplish my mission as the head administrator, I believe that the following skills are very vital to install law enforcement in the department.
Selflessness
To make sure that I effectively enforce the law enforcement code of ethics, I would make sure that I give priority to the interest of my subjects as this would enable me to win trust and gratitude from them. I have confidence that this is a theoretical spectrum in ensuring ethical practices in any given agency since the individuals (subjects) could sacrifice their belief or behaviors to comply with the newly established moral codes being introduced by an administrator. Again, I would be willing to sacrifice my individuals even more than my team for enforcement success.
Enthusiasm
Enthusiasm is another crucial factor in making sure that administrators have their subordinates comply with the law enforcement code of ethics. Through positive attitude, I trust that as an administrator, I would be able to not only to make sure that disciplinary rules are observed in the agency but also the ethical practices are made the core of the rules. An agency which is enthusiastic to establish its reputation will make sure the moral codes are practiced rather than strict observation of the rules. Sometimes, the team will be forced to go beyond the rule limits to deliver the best services to the public. Again, I would not close the eyes to unethical activities even at the executive level; I would ensure zero tolerance of unethical practices in the agency notwithstanding of the stakeholders` rank or positions.
Integrity
As an administrator, I fully understand that integrity is essential in enforcing the ethical practices in a police department. Honesty and moral would enable any other administrator to convince his or her subjects to embrace ethical codes; through honesty and strong moral principles, public administrators will have a positive reputation in the view or the community and the law enforcement agency. As a result, they can easily insure the ethical practices in a given organization. If the team members are unable to read aspects of integrity in the administrators, then the implementation of the moral codes could prove futile within an agency.
Perception
To insure ethical practice in the police department, I will consider every opinion of each stakeholder in the agency, regardless of his or her position or rank. As a public administrator, I believe that by doing so, I will be able to acquire the valuable opinions from all stakeholders that could be very vital to reframe the standards of law enforcement code of ethics in the agency. Through the views, I would be able to determine if there is any contravention regarding the codes and this would allow me to remedy any breached section of the codes. Through the opinions, I would also be able to track the implementation processes of the ethical codes.
Mission Statements
A mission statement is also epitome to advocate for ethical practices. I would consider emphasizing the agency values in the mission statements. I will make sure that the statements are made, and that the agency members sign a confirmation that they will abide by the ethical values. Such approval would remind the subjects the values and how they are important with regards to the services to the public. The same will also enhance co-relation among the staff.
Mentoring
I also believe in the concept of disseminated leadership regardless of industry or field. Therefore, I would consider mentoring my subjects so that in the future, the agency will have enough officers to enforce the ethical codes efficiently. Through mentorship, the future generation would not run short in moral conducts. If I participate in training protocols, I am sure I will cultivate a persistent culture of ethical practice in the future generation. Ethical codes behaviors are not made, but they are preferably implemented through training.
Ethical Policy Drafting
During the establishment of the ethical policy draft, I will make a comprehensive consultation to enable me to capture a good idea of what people want to be featured in the code of ethics for policing. I will first come up with a strategy to integrate the system into the functioning of the police department. After this, I would seek endorsement from relevant officers in the department. The following stage will be to circulate the code to all employees in a readable and portable form. I will also extend my consultation to even the trade unions as well as engaging the members of the public. Through a channeled system, I will grant each staff a personal opportunity to respond to the content of the code. The employees should understand how to react if they are faced with a potential breach of the law. I would then engage the various head of the staff to make sure that their team understands the provisions of the code. I will then ensure that the concerns raised according to the response are well covered in the context of the law.
In the next stage, I will consider making adherence to the ethical code obligatory. I believe this will be achieved by integrating the code of ethics in all the contracts of employment. I will make sure that in case of the breach of the ethical code, disciplinary procedures are well defined in the agreement. This after explaining to the staff the consequences of breaching the code. Through my enforcement committee, I will make sure that we put in place a regular review of the code so that updates are made where necessary. The copies will also be distributed to all the stakeholders including the members of the public. For proper evaluation of the implementation of the code, I will make sure that annual reports cover the assessment of the enforcement of the code of ethics in the police department. This will make the public and all the stakeholders acknowledge the position of the police department in regards to ethical issues.
