Introduction
I conceive that construction is one of the most critical elements that define every civilization and a fundamental indicator of human creativity over different epics. Based on this understanding, I have had a passion and particular enlightenment about the construction industry since my elementary levels of education. Even though at this time I only had a random idea about creating structures, my father was instrumental in making me refine my understanding of the construction industry and gaining practical insights into it. My father who was a project manager of a small construction company acted as my role model and a constant source of motivation for me to pursue the field of engineering. He loved his work and was passionate about every bit of it. These attributes of my father and his commitment to work promoted my interest in construction. Being close to him made me embrace his qualities of clarity of perception, excellence in management, and active response to work. These experiences at a young age molded my personality. Out of my sheer interest and having a father as a role model in the field of engineering, I sometimes joined him at the construction site, got the insights into the general construction operations and basic engineering skills. In the construction site, I have seen the fantastic scale and speed of employed by Chinese manufacturing, as well as the dedication and hard work of Chinese construction workers. I am overly stunned by their high levels of technology and commitment to work which is the reason I am proud of them. Nonetheless, I am interested in understanding why the construction industry is not as automated as the manufacturing industry.
To best get an answer to the question about lack of automation in the construction industry in pursuing my career goals, I got the impetus to delve deep into the study of engineering. I chose Engineering Cost as my major during my college study which further afforded me the knowledge and skill background to pursue a graduate degree in the same field. Guided by my previous understanding of the construction industry, I have found several answers to several confusions that I had about the operations and management of the construction industry. Being the president of our school BIM Club enabled me to closely interact with a community that focuses on "Informationization of Construction." I regularly organized academic salons on building automation and informationization of construction. I also organized two visits to local design institutes to study their approaches in advancing the construction industry's automatic processes. I have gradually noted that the construction industry is dynamic and is in a period of rapid developments and transformation. These advances provide me with a room to explore further, participate in the change and be part of the team that catapults an "industrial revolution."
My tutor is a scholar and educator who advocates for truth and has inspired my long-lasting love of academics. He made me believe that there are universal truths behind the facts. I firmly believe that to promote development within the construction industry better, players, especially the engineers need to observe and think about the industry, assess its characteristics, and align technological developments to the laws of the industry. At the same time, I acknowledge the transformative hence I remain focused on developing my career as a reputable scholar or a teacher.
