There are certain aspects that will lead to the choice of a language for use in a given country where it happens not to be their local dialect. Language is a means of communication that facilitates business transactions, learning and carrying out research (Montgomery and Crystal). In addition, it will also facilitate transportation, entertainment, and politics among many other activities. A language for choice as a global one will give people a chance to communicate with two cultures simultaneously. It needs to be familiar with the modern reality by having words and vocabulary that is in line with the current business formats and politics and academics. It can also be readily flexible by coming up with new words to accommodate the ever-changing world.

Multilingualism is the aspect of using more than one language in ones day to day activities. The trend in the worlds has made it virtually impossible for one to carry out transactions if he is still monolingual. Northrup observes that multilingualism is becoming a necessity as most people are born into being taught their mother tongues, and then they have to be taught an additional language that is common in their locality. The exposure to the internet and the need to transact with people across borders and socialize has called for the need to learn a second common language. Hence it will have some economic advantages and will be in a position to dominate over others. When selling or making purchases, they are in a position to interact with their customers effectively.

Perceptual dialectology is the study that is involved with the way that linguistics views the changes that are there in a single language making it have several variations. There are aspects that are responsible for the existence of these variations leading to their existence and origination, and they have some specific functions. There is the standard dialect, but for the aforementioned reasons, some variations are developed over time. This study will involve the folk perceptions, natural boundaries and the traditional linguistics meanings (Northrup). This is what makes it possible to identify where one comes from and by extensions the likelihood of one being aligned to the beliefs and cultural expectations of the given localities.

There are situations where there can be different sounds or forms of a given language without the subjects having a variance in their environment which gives rise to free variation in linguistics. An example is the different pronunciations of some English words for the British and Americans without altering their meanings. Montgomery and Crystal argue that the different pronunciations are not incorrect and the meanings are still retained, but additional words may be included. This is evident when accents are considered for most of the words in the most commonly used words giving rise to the speaker's regional identity.

Conclusion

The findings from the surveys above indicate that English is one of the languages that is widely used. Most nations choose it as the language of instruction in their learning institutions. With time different dialects of the English language have been developed especially when one considers the English across several continents. There are also variations of English and several accents that have ascended giving rise to several free variations of it. All these are strong indications for English as a language becoming a global means of communication.
